  • The nature of magnetic anomalies in subduction zones

    Gorodnitskii, A. M.   Brusilovskii, Yu. V.   Ivanenko, A. N.   Popov, K. V.   Shishkina, N. A.

The analysis of the magnetic survey data suggests the presence of a frontal zone of intense magnetic anomalies in a number of the Pacific island-arc systems. These zones with amplitudes of 100-300 nT are observed within the Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian island arc systems, in Southern and Central America, and Alaska. As demonstrated by the solution of the inverse problem and petromagnetic investigation of the rocks, these zones are presumably related to the serpentinite bodies which form as a result of the hydration of the upper mantle peridotites by the oceanic water penetrating through a system of cracks and fractures into the subducting slab at its bend. The rock magnetic studies show that magnetite is the main carrier of magnetization in these serpentinite bodies. Hydration of the subducting slab also causes hydration of the mantle rocks of the overriding plate with the formation of the magnetized serpentinite wedge. The decompaction of ultrabasic rocks under hydration is marked by a decrease in the gravity field and velocities of elastic waves. As the subducting plate loses water, it becomes embrittled and becomes the localization region for the epicenters of the strongest earthquakes. Magnetic survey can be used for revealing the potential sources of catastrophic earthquakes.

  • The M/M/1+M queue with a utility-maximizing server

    Zhan, Dongyuan   Ward, Amy R.

We consider an M/M/1+M queue with a human server, who is influenced by incentives. Specifically, the server chooses his service rate by maximizing his utility function. Our objective is to guarantee the existence of a unique maximum. The complication is that most sensible utility functions depend on the server utilization, a non-simple expression. We derive a property of the utilization that guarantees quasiconcavity of any utility function that multiplies the server's concave (including linear) "value" of his service rate by the server utilization. • Coarse Ricci Curvature as a Function on M x M

Ache, Antonio G.   Warren, Micah W.

We use the framework used by Bakry and Emery in their work on logarithmic Sobolev inequalities to define a notion of coarse Ricci curvature on smooth metric measure spaces alternative to the notion proposed by Y. Ollivier. This function can be used to recover the Ricci tensor on smooth Riemannian manifolds by the formula for any curve .

  • M&A price pressure revisited

    Kryzanowski, Lawrence   Nie, Yulin (George)

We find strong evidence using two covariance decomposition methodologies that arbitrage short selling plays the relatively most important role in explaining the pure equity price effects for acquirers for M&A announcements during the 2009-2015 period. We find that the abnormal net purchase ratio of managerial insiders (i.e., managerial informedness), CSR composite ranking (i.e., interest alignment with various firm stakeholders) and the inside debt ratio (i.e., managerial conservatism) are the most important determinants of the acquirer price effects at M&A announcements both independently and through their effect on arbitrage activities at M&A announcements.

  • The M/M/C queueing system in a random environment

    Liu, Zaiming   Yu, Senlin

Abstract An M/M/C M / M / C queueing system operating in a Markovian environment is studied. This paper focuses on the stationary behavior and presents the theoretical framework. For a special case, analytical results are derived that are analogous to the classical solutions for the simple M/M/C M / M / C queue. The elaborate analysis of a specific case is given to illustrate the basic idea of the framework. A technical proof with respect to the existence of d−1 d − 1 roots is displayed to sustain the corresponding theory.
