  • ?ztürk v. Turkey

There is little scope under Article 10, Section 2 of the Convention for restrictions on political speech or on debate on matters of public interest. Fact that author of book was acquitted of offense for which here publisher had been convicted and that the first edition of the book had been on open sale since 1991 and had not apparently aggravated the “separatist” threat in Turkey indicated a violation of the Convention.

  • Comparing RECIST with EORTC criteria in metastatic bladder cancer

    ?ztürk   Hakan

To compare RECIST and EORTC criteria in an evaluation of response to therapy in metastatic bladder cancer and to assess their influence on decisions to administer additional therapy. A total of 42 untreated patients (38 male, 4 female) with metastatic bladder cancer were included in the study, which took place between July 2007 and April 2013. The mean age was 66.1 ± 9.93 years (range 41–84 years). A total of 144 metastatic foci were evaluated using multislice CT and 18FDG-PET/CT before and after first-line chemotherapy. The locations, sizes, numbers and SUVmax of the metastatic foci before and after chemotherapy were recorded, and the response to therapy was evaluated separately using RECIST and EORTC criteria, after which a statistical comparison was made. According to the RECIST and EORTC criteria, the rate of complete remission (CR) was 9.5 and 16.6 %, the rate of partial remission (PR) was 28.6 and 40.5 %, the rate of stable disease (SD) was 23.8 and 14.3 %, and the rate of progressive disease (PD) was 31.0 and 28.6 %, respectively. The overall response rate (ORR) was 38.1 versus 57.1 %, respectively, and there were no differences between the two criteria in terms of their detection of progressive disease. The rate of SD was higher with RECIST criteria; however, the difference between the two criteria was not significant in terms of PR and CR. A group of patients that had been determined as having a SD according to RECIST criteria were grouped as PR and/or CR according to EORTC criteria. Additional chemotherapy protocols can be used in second-line chemotherapy and/or cisplatin-resistant patients, according to RECIST criteria. In evaluating the response to first-line chemotherapy for metastatic bladder cancer, EORTC criteria, using 18FDG-PET/CT scans, can be considered as a more applicable and accurate diagnostic tool. The anatomical findings obtained through imaging methods and from functional/metabolic data obtained by PET/CT can be useful in the planning of second- or third-line chemotherapy, and a high accuracy in re-staging can spare patients from second-line or even third-line chemotherapy.

  • Determining management strategies for the Sarikum Nature Protection Area

    ?ztürk   Sevgi

In recent years, many environmental problems have become important factors in promoting the economic need to develop tourist activity: climate change such as energy wars, increasing hunger and aridity, population increases in urban areas, excessive and unthinking use of natural resources, difficult international relations, economic competition, and increasing environmental stress. Trends in global tourism have changed with changes in culture and our attitude to nature. Changes in both the profile and consumption patterns of tourists have called for the need to balance the use of natural and cultural assets with the need to adequately protect them. In this study, the Sarikum Nature Protection Area (SNPA) was selected as a case study because of its significance as a Turkish wetland area and the variety of different ecosystems coexisting within it. The study focussed on management strategies, but also provides a broader strategy for an area that currently has no management plan. Strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analyses of the area were gathered and analyzed using R'WOT analysis (ranking + SWOT), a multi-criteria assessment method, in order to determine strategies, obtain the participation of interest groups, and assess their opinions and attitudes. The analysis showed the following: the rich biological diversity and the existence of endemic species were the reserve's most significant strength; the presence of natural areas in surrounding regions was the most significant opportunity; the shortage of infrastructure and lack of legal regulation of ecotourism was the most significant weakness; and the lack of a management plan was the most immediate threat.

  • On the dynamics of a washing machine with flexible components

    ?ztürk   Ersin

The growing demand for highly efficient, reliable and inexpensive washing machines has driven the need for state-of-the-art numerical tools to predict, evaluate and optimize both the existing and new designs. Improving the washing machine's design requires in-depth knowledge of the machine's structure. In particular, the dynamic behavior of the structure during the spinning period needs to be studied carefully at the design stage.A numerical tool for predicting dynamic behavior would save considerable time, reduce the number of prototypes that need to be built, and decrease development costs. In this study, the dynamic behavior of a horizontal-axis, front-loading washing machine was studied by using commercial multibody simulation software, MSC.Adams. In the numerical model, the housing's side panels and spring strut bar were modeled as flexible components.
