  • Congestion Pricing Study of San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in California

Zhang, Lin   Du, Haining   Lee, Linda

The San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge in California is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the United States. A study on congestion pricing was performed to address traffic congestion in this corridor. Existing toll plaza counts and travel time data were used in the estimation of traffic demand by applying queuing analysis. Regression analysis was conducted to estimate the number of drivers who would shift to other modes in response to the congestion pricing. Five congestion pricing alternatives were examined. The bigger the price differential between peak and nonpeak toll, the more delays, queue length, and duration of congestion were reduced. Of the five alternatives, the one with a $2.00 price differential between peak and nonpeak toll was selected and implemented on July 1, 2010. This adopted congestion pricing strategy was to reduce the traffic demand by 4.2% and 5.0% in the a.m. and p.m. peak periods, respectively. The congestion pricing was to reduce significant delays (24% to 30%) by removing only a fraction of the vehicles (4.2% to 5.0%) from the congested Bay Bridge. A preliminary analysis comparing traffic counts between July and September 2009 and July and September 2010 found that, in July, traffic volume decreased by 8.4% and 7.3% during the a.m. and p.m. peak periods, respectively. In September, traffic volume decreased by 6.0% and 3.9% during the a.m. and p.m. peak periods, respectively. A comprehensive evaluation study is under way to identify changes due to congestion pricing and changes due to a multitude of exogenous factors.

  • Transport barriers and strategies of antitumor nanocarriers delivery system

Zhang, Lin   Wang, Yazhou   Cao, Yang   Lou, Deshuai   Wang, Bochu

Nanocarriers with unique characteristics have attracted great attentions in tumor treatment, but therapeutic efficacy of drugs is limited by the nonuniform delivery of nanocarriers to tumor by three progresses blood circulation system, tumor vessels and tumor interstitium. The total number of nanocarriers usually was reduced dramatically into tumor, because nanocarriers in blood vessels always can be cleared by RES system or accumulated in kidney and liver. Abnormal vessels are almost uneven allocation on tumor surface and cannot contribute to deliver nanocarriers to all the region of tumors, especially the interior of tumors. In addition, nanocarriers will be retained in perivascular space of tumor under high interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) and heterogeneous structure of tumor matrix. In this article, we reviewed the structure of nanocarriers and the barriers in tumor microenvironment influencing delivery of nanocarriers. With the aim of transport over these barriers to increase the delivery efficiency of nanocarriers, two strategies tumor microenvironment normalization and nanocarriers optimization were proposed and designed. • Bit error rate analysis of chaotic cognitive radio system over slow fading channels

Zhang, Lin   Lu, Huaiyin   Wu, Zhiqiang   Jiang, Ming

In this paper, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of a chaotic cognitive radio (CCR) system, which enjoys benefits of high security provided by a chaotic communication system and high flexibility in non-contiguous spectrum access offered by an overlay cognitive radio (CR) system. In the proposed CCR system, the chaotic sequence is generated in the frequency domain instead of in the time domain, hence enabling non-contiguous spectrum access. We hereby derive the bit error rate expressions of CCR systems over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and slow flat Rayleigh, Rician, and Nakagami fading channels. Specifically, we use the probability distribution of the chaotic map to evaluate the energy distribution of the transmitted signals over the identified non-continuous subcarrier bands, and then apply the definite integral representation of Q-function to calculate the bit error rate. The results from theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are compared, demonstrating an excellent agreement between the two approaches.

Zhang, Lin   Yang, Zhao Sheng   Jia, Hong Mei   Wang, Bin

The execution time of shortest path computing determines the efficiency and quality of dynamic traffic assignment. This paper focuses on the design of a parallel calculation system for the shortest path in traffic network aims to reduce the execution time of shortest path computing in dynamic traffic assignment. Here we mainly focus on the process of algorithm parallelization and network decomposition. As the core of the system, a two-queue parallel algorithm is designed for the shortest path in the traffic network which the recursive spectral bisection decomposition approach is employed to separate the network into several parts and the algorithm acts on every sub-network on each processor. The proposed system are experimented on real traffic network and a set of policies are employed that the number of processors is designed in each policy in the study case, and the performances of the parallel calculation system are discussed, the proposed algorithm is proved to be the efficient and effective.
