  • A novel TiO2 nanorod/nanoparticle composite architecture to improve the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells

Zhu, Min   Chen, Ling   Gong, Haibo   Zi, Min   Cao, Bingqiang

In this article, we first prove that the length increase of TiO 2 nanorods by extending reaction time is infeasible for improving dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) efficiency because the longer growth time will lead to combination of nanorods from the roots part and formation of dense film. Then a TiO 2 nanorod-nanoparticle mesoporous film composite anode structure is designed and fabricated that serves as a model architecture for efficient cell devices as it simultaneously offers a large surface area, good light-scattering characteristics and a highly conductive pathway for charge carrier collection. Under standard solar cell measurement conditions, a photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 2.51% is obtained from the nanorod-nanoparticle film composite structure, which is higher than that of pure TiO 2 nanorods DSSC (1.11%). By another surface treatment process with TiCl 4, the DSSC efficiency based on such composite TiO 2 anode is further improved to 3.25%. [All rights reserved Elsevier].

  • Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles/Hydroxyapatite Composite Coated Implants to Locally Inhibit Osteoclastic Activity

Zhu, Min   Zhu, Yufang   Ni, Bin   Xie, Ning   Lu, Xuhua   Shi, Jianlin   Zeng, Yi   Guo, Xiang

In an attempt to improve implant-bone integration and accelerate bone fracture healing from resisting osteoclastic resorption point of view, we have employed a novel procedure to develop a mesoporous silica nanoparticles/hydroxyapatite (MSNs/HA) composite coating onto stainless Kirschner wire substrate. Characterizations of the surface microstructures indicated enlarged specific surface area compared to HA-coated wires as control, thus the MSNs/HA composite coated implants are endowed with abilities to locally deliver biomedical substances and enhance fracture healing. Herein, zoledronic acid (ZOL) as a model drug, different doses of which were immobilized in the mesoporous coating toward decreasing osteoclastic resorption activity. The loading capacities of ZOL increased almost eight-folds to that of pure HA coating, and the introduction of MSNs obviously retarded ZOL release to achieve a more sustained release profile. After certain periods of osteoclast like cells co-culturing with ZOL contained wires, tartrat-resistant acid phosphatases (TRAP) staining of polynucleated cells and a pit formation assay were performed to investigate the ZOL dose-dependent anti-resorption activity. The promoted local effect on osteoclasts will be of clinical benefit to support implant integration and bone repair.

  • Histone Decacetylase Inhibitors Prevent Mitochondrial Fragmentation and Elicit Early Neuroprotection against MPP+

Zhu, Min   Li, Wen-Wei   Lu, Chuan-Zhen

Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by progressive loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra. Recent investigations have shown that mitochondrial fragmentation, an early event during apoptosis, is implicated in the degeneration of DA neurons in PD, and more importantly, preventing mitochondrial fragmentation could rescue cell death in several PD models. Therefore, mitochondrial dynamics may be a therapeutic target for early intervention in PD. However, much remains unknown about the mechanism underlying mitochondrial fragmentation in PD. Methods The alterations in mitochondrial morphology, cell apoptosis, and mitochondrial shaping protein levels were detected after SH-SY5Y cells were treated with various doses of MPP+ or rotenone. Results Mitochondrial fragmentation is an early event during apoptosis caused by MPP+ but not rotenone, and Trichostatin A (TSA), a commonly used histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, selectively rescues mitochondrial fragmentation and cell death induced by lower doses of MPP+. Mitochondrial fragmentation triggered by lower doses of MPP+ may be a result of Mfn2 down-regulation, which could be completely reversed by TSA. Further investigation suggests that TSA prevents MPP+-induced Mfn2 down-regulation via inhibiting histone deacetylation over Mfn2 promoter and alleviating its transcriptional dysfunction. Conclusions Histone deacetylase inhibitors prevent mitochondrial fragmentation and elicit early neuroprotection in PD cell model induced by MPP+. Hence, HDAC inhibitors may be a potential early treatment for PD.

  • Role of oxygen concentration distribution and microstructure in luminescent properties of laser-irradiated silicon

Zhu, Min   Li, Xiaohong   Li, Guoqiang   Xie, Changxin   Qiu, Rong   Li, Jiawen   Huang, Wenhao

We study the photoluminescence (PL) of monocrystalline silicon irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses in different environments (deionized water and air) and energy intensities. The fluorescence spectroscopy measurement results indicate that the visible blue luminescence is observed both from the silicon surfaces ablated in the deionized water and air. The more interesting phenomenon is that the position and shape of the emission luminescence peaks in the visible range are substantially the same at the same excitation wavelength 330 nm. Compared with the granular-like microstructure generated on the silicon surface in air, the smaller and stripe-like microstructure is formed in the deionized water as the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) measures. The results of the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) show that silicon and oxygen is the main elemental composition on laser-induced silicon surfaces, and the oxygen content on the sample surfaces formed in air is nearly four times more than that in the deionized water. The studies confirm that oxygen element plays an important role in PL enhancement. The PL is not merely caused by the oxygen defects or quantum confinement effects, but is commonly decided by the concentration distribution of SiOx (x < 2) and the depth of the surface microstructure. The PL achieves the strongest only when the surface microstructure depth is not too deep and the shallow low oxide SiO, is intensive. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Circulating adiponectin levels increase in rats on caloric restriction: the potential for insulin sensitization

Zhu, Min   Miura, Junnosuke   Lu, Lucy X.   Bernier, Michel   DeCabo, Rafael   Lane, Mark A.   Roth, George S.   et. al.

Caloric restriction (CR) has a well-known insulin sensitizing effect in vivo. Although this effect has been confirmed in rodents and primates for many years, its precise molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Here we show a significant increase in plasma adiponectin and a decrease in blood glucose, plasma triglyceride and insulin levels in rats maintained on CR diet for 2, 10, 15, and 20 months. Long-term CR rats exhibited significantly higher insulin-stimulated insulin receptor tyrosine phosphorylation and lower PTP-1B activity both in liver and skeletal muscle than those observed in rats fed ad libitum (AL). In addition, the triglyceride levels in these tissues were significantly lower in long-term CR animals. Interestingly, concentrations of plasma adiponectin in long-term CR rats were associated with increased expression of the transcription factor mRNAs for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)α, γ and δ, but decreased expression for SREBP-1c, resulting in a concerted modulation in the expression of key transcription target genes involved in fatty acid oxidation and energy combustion in liver. Taken together, our findings suggest an important role for adiponectin in the beneficial effects of long-term CR.
