  • Precursory Signals Associated with the Interannual Variability of the Asian Summer Monsoon

    Yang, Song   Lau, K-M.   Sankar-Rao, M.

In this work, the interannual variability of the Asian summer monsoon is studied by analyzing outputs of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project integration using the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres general circulation model. The main effort is devoted to exploring and understanding precursory signals associated with the interannual variability of the Asian monsoon and deciphering possible physical mechanisms responsible for the signals. It is found that strong precursory signals of highly anomalous Asian summer monsoon appear over the subtropical Asian region during the previous winter-spring seasons. Prior to a strong summer monsoon, the westerlies over subtropical Asia are weaker than normal, and vice versa. Dynamically consistent changes are found in other fields such as atmospheric temperature, geopotential height, and surface temperature. These precursory signals seem to have a barotropic structure in the troposphere. They exist over a broad region and last for two to three seasons. The robustness of the signals is important for improving seasonal prediction of the Asian summer monsoon. It is hypothesized that the above-described precursory signals of the Asian summer monsoon are linked to land-surface hydrologic processes, such as changes in snow mass and soil moisture in the Asian continent, as well as anomalous sea surface temperature forcing in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Evidence in support of the above hypothesis can be found in the variability of a variety of parameters from both model simulation and observations

  • Optimization problems in correlated networks

Yang, Song   Trajanovski, Stojan   Kuipers, Fernando A.

Solving the shortest path and min-cut problems are key in achieving high-performance and robust communication networks. Those problems have often been studied in deterministic and uncorrelated networks both in their original formulations as well as in several constrained variants. However, in real-world networks, link weights (e.g., delay, bandwidth, failure probability) are often correlated due to spatial or temporal reasons, and these correlated link weights together behave in a different manner and are not always additive, as commonly assumed. In this paper, we first propose two correlated link weight models, namely (1) the deterministic correlated model and (2) the (log-concave) stochastic correlated model. Subsequently, we study the shortest path problem and the min-cut problem under these two correlated models. We prove that these two problems are NP-hard under the deterministic correlated model, and even cannot be approximated to arbitrary degree in polynomial time. However, these two problems are solvable in polynomial time under the (constrained) nodal deterministic correlated model, and can be solved by convex optimization under the (log-concave) stochastic correlated model.

  • PHOTOGRAPHING CONTROL METHOD AND DEVICE

Disclosed in an embodiment of the present disclosure are a photographing control method and device, the photographing control method comprising: detecting whether a mobile intelligent terminal is in a photographing state, if so, triggering the action of an intelligent wearable device to detect a user. The intelligent wearable device transmits an acquired motion trajectory thereof to the mobile intelligent terminal, and if the motion trajectory is detected by the mobile intelligent terminal to be a preset motion trajectory, triggering a camera application for photographing. The above content reveals that in the photographing control method, the intelligent wearable device detects the user action, and the mobile intelligent terminal is automatically triggered for photographing, such that the mobile intelligent terminal can photograph by remote control. In the photographing process, the photographing button of the mobile intelligent terminal does not need to be triggered by the user's hand, thus being easy to operate and simple to use.

  • Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) Intersensor Calibration Using a Simultaneous Conical Overpass Technique

Yang, Song   Weng, Fuzhong   Yan, Banghua   Sun, Ninghai   Goldberg, Mitch

A new intersensor calibration scheme is developed for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) to correct its scan-angle-dependent bias, the radar calibration beacon interference on the F-15 satellite, and other intersensor biases. The intersensor bias is characterized by the simultaneous overpass measurements with the F-13 SSM/I as a reference. This sensor data record (SDR) intersensor calibration procedure is routinely running at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is now used for reprocessing all SSM/I environmental data records (EDR), including total precipitable water (TPW) and surface precipitation. Results show that this scheme improves the consistency of the monthly SDR's time series from different SSM/I sensors. Relative to the matched rain products from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, the bias of SSM/I monthly precipitation is reduced by 12% after intersensor calibration. TPW biases between sensors are reduced by 75% over the global ocean and 20% over the tropical ocean, respectively. The intersensor calibration reduces biases by 20.6%, 15.7%, and 6.5% for oceanic, land, and global precipitation, respectively. The TPW climate trend is 1.59% decade(-1) (or 0.34 mm decade(-1)) for the global ocean and 1.39% decade(-1) (or 0.63 mm decade(-1)) for the tropical ocean, indicating related trends decrease of 38% and 54%, respectively, from the uncalibrated SDRs. Results demonstrate the large impacts of this calibration on the TPW climate trend.
