  • Experimental investigation of metal foam for controlling centrifugal fan noise

    Xu, Chen   Mao, Yijun

Abstract This paper presents an experimental investigation on the metal foam for controlling a centrifugal fan noise. Nine samples of metal foam with different types of cells, i.e., open, semi-open and close, are employed to compare their effects on the aerodynamic performance and noise level of the centrifugal fan. Experimental data confirms that the open cell metal foam is the most effective to control the fan noise because it not only significantly suppresses the tonal noise but also attenuates the broadband noise. Moreover, the geometrical parameters of the open cell metal foam, i.e., pores per inch and porosity, are studied to investigate their effects on the aerodynamic performance and noise level of the centrifugal fan.

  • Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows from Cylindrical Jets in a Dense Environment

    Xu, Chen   Yong-feng, Huang

It is widely accepted that many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by relativistic jets. Previous studies on the beaming effects in GRBs are mainly based on the conical geometry. However, some observations of the relativistic jets in radio galaxies, active galactic nuclei, and “micro-quasars” have shown that many of these outflows are cylindrical, but not conical. In this study, we assume that the jets that produce GRBs are cylindrical, and that the circum-burst environment is dense and optically thick. In the prompt burst phase, the strong X-ray emission can sublimate the circum-burst medium to form an optically thin channel, from which the optical photons are allowed to escape. As a result, the optical afterglows can be observed only for the observers who are positioned on the axes of jets. It is shown that the observed optical afterglows usually decay very rapidly (in the form of Sv oc t^v^l1 where p is the index of electron power-law distribution), due to the joint effect of the lateral expansion of the cylindrical jet and the absorption of optical photons by the dust outside the channel. Our model provides a possible explanation for the dark gamma-ray bursts.

  • Tracking Property Analysis of a Dry Gas Seal Operating in Low Pressure Condition

Xu, Chen   Huang, Wei Feng   Liu, Xiang Feng

An analysis is performed on the tracking property of a spiral groove dry gas seal (DGS) operating in low pressure conditions based on a semi-analytical method developed by Miller and Green. The stiffness model of gas film is established by solving compressible Reynolds equation. And the stiffness model is applied to the kinetic model of seal ring to obtain tracking movement of seal ring. The influences of seal ring face geometry parameters, namely the spiral angle, the groove depth, the groove-dam ratio and the groove-land ratio, on tracking property are evaluated by a series of analysis. Recommended values of such parameters are given as a result of parametric design, to improve tracking performance of DGS in low pressure condition, which one can refer to in turbine compressor spiral groove DGS designs.
