  • Solubilities of Tris(o-phenylenedioxy)cyclotriphosphazene in Selected Solvents

    Tian, Na-Na   Wang, Li-Sheng   Jiang, Ru-Yi

Tris-(o-phenylenedioxy)-cyclotriphosphazene (TPP) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis (EA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The melting point and the enthalpy of fusion of TPP were measured by da ifferential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and the thermal stability of TPP was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Using a static analytical method, the solubility data of TPP in nine solvents were measured and correlated with an empirical equation. Moreover, using the Scatchard Hildebrand model, activity coefficients have also been calculated and compared with the experimental values. The partial molar excess enthalpies at infinite dilution were also predicted.

  • Effect of resveratrol on Treg/Th17 signaling and ulcerative colitis treatment in mice.

Yao, Jun   Wei, Cheng   Wang, Jian-Yao   Zhang, Ru   Li, Ying-Xue   Wang, Li-Sheng

AIM: To determine the therapeutic efficacy of resveratrol on ulcerative colitis (UC) and its underlying mechanisms.; METHODS: The mouse UC model was developed using 5% dextran sulfate sodium. Mice were randomly divided into four groups: normal control, UC model group, resveratrol low-dose group (RLD; 50 mg/kg per day), and resveratrol high-dose group (RHD; 100 mg/kg per day).; RESULTS: The results showed that RLD regulates Treg/Th17 balance mainly through reducing the number of Th17 cells, whereas RHD regulates Treg/Th17 balance through both downregulating the number of Th17 cells and upregulating the number of Treg cells. Resveratrol can also regulate the level of plasma and intestinal mucosal cytokines including interleukin (IL)-10, transforming growth factor-beta1, IL-6, and IL-17. The expressions of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 were significantly decreased in the intestinal tissues of mice treated with resveratrol.; CONCLUSION: The therapeutic efficacy of resveratrol in UC is dose dependent and closely associated with the regulation of Treg/Th17 balance and the HIF-1alpha/mTOR signaling pathway.=20

  • Nitrided HfTiON/Ga2O3(Gd2O3) as stacked gate dielectric for GaAs MOS applications

Wang, Li-Sheng   Xu, Jing-Ping   Liu, Lu   Tang, Wing-Man   Lai, Pui-To

GaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors with HfTiON as a gate dielectric and Ga2O3(Gd2O3) (GGO) as an interlayer annealed in NH3 or N-2 are fabricated, and their electrical properties are characterized. Experimental results show that the HfTiON/GGO/GaAs MOS device annealed in NH3 exhibits a low interface-state density (1.1 x 10(12) cm(-2) eV(-1)), a small gate leakage current (1.66 x 10(-4) A cm(-2) at V-g = V-fb, + 1V), a large equivalent dielectric constant (25.7), and a good capacitance-voltage behavior. All these should be attributed to the fact that the GGO interlayer and postdeposition annealing in NH3 can effectively suppress the formation of interfacial Ga/As oxides and remove the excess As atoms at the GaAs surface, thus reducing the relevant defects at/near the GGO/GaAs interface. • Dynamically crosslinked polymer nanocomposites to treat multidrug-resistant bacterial biofilms

Zhu, Dong Yu   Landis, Ryan F.   Li, Cheng-Hsuan   Gupta, Akash   Wang, Li-Sheng   Geng, Yingying   Gopalakrishnan, Sanjana   Guo, Jian Wei   Rotello, Vincent M.

Multidrug-resistant biofilms are highly resistant to current antimicrobial therapies. We have developed an antimicrobial platform that integrates the bacteria-killing phytochemical carvacrol into dynamically crosslinked polymer nanocomposites (DCPNs). Taking advantage of a reversibly crosslinked Schiff-base scaffold throughout the engineered emulsions, DCPNs exhibited long-term shelf-life and good stability in serum, while readily disassembling in acidic microenvironments. Furthermore, we demonstrated that DCPNs efficiently penetrate the biofilm matrix, eradicating both Gram-negative/positive bacteria enclosed within. Moreover, DCPNs showed no observable toxicity to fibroblast mammalian cells with the same antimicrobial concentrations necessary to eradicate MDR biofilms. Given their potent antimicrobial and stimuli-responsive dissociation characteristics in a biofilm setting, DCPNs are a suitable therapeutic platform for combating MDR bacterial infections.

  • Enhanced Photovoltage Response of Hematite-X-Ferrite Interfaces (X =3D Cr,Mn,Co,or Ni)

    Bian, Liang   Li, Hai-long   Li, Yu-jin   Nie, Jia-nan   Dong, Fa-qin   Dong, Hai-liang   Song, Mian-xin   Wang, Li-sheng   Zhou, Tian-liang   Zhang, Xiao-yan   Li, Xin-xi   Xie, Lei

High-fluorescent p-X-ferrites (XFe2O4; XFO; X =3D Fe, Cr, Mn, Co, or Ni) embedded in n-hematite (Fe2O3) surfaces were successfully fabricated via a facile bio-approach using Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. The results revealed that the X ions with high/low work functions modify the unpaired spin Fe2+-O(2-)orbitals in the XFe2O4 lattices to become localized paired spin orbitals at the bottom of conduction band, separating the photovoltage response signals (73.36 similar to 455.16/-72.63 similar to-32.43 meV). These (Fe2O3)-O-O-(XFe2O4) interfacial coupling behaviors at two fluorescence emission peaks (785/795 nm) are explained via calculating electron-hole effective masses (Fe2O3-FeFe2O4 17. 23 x 10(-31) kg; Fe2O3-CoFe2O4 3.93 x 10(-31) kg; Fe2O3-NiFe2O4 11.59 x 10(-31) kg; Fe2O3-CrFe2O4 - 4.2 x 10(-31) kg; Fe2O3-MnFe2O4 - 11.73 x 10(-31) kg). Such a system could open up a new idea in the design of photovoltage response biosensors.

  • Spred2 is involved in imatinib-induced cytotoxicity in chronic myeloid leukemia cells

Liu, Xiao-Yun   Yang, Yue-Feng   Wu, Chu-Tse   Xiao, Feng-Jun   Zhang, Qun-Wei   Ma, Xiao-Ni   Li, Qing-Fang   Yan, Jun   Wang, Hua   Wang, Li-Sheng

Spreds, a recently established class of negative regulators of the Ras-ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase) pathway, are involved in hematogenesises, allergic disorders and tumourigenesis. However, their role in hematologic neoplasms is largely unknown. Possible effects of Spreds on other signal pathways closely related to Ras-ERK have been poorly investigated. In this study, we investigated the in vitro effects of Spred2 on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. In addition to inhibiting the well-established Ras-ERK cascade, adenovirus-mediated Spred2 over-expression inhibits constitutive and stem cell factor (SCF)-stimulated sphingosine kinase-1 (SPHK1) and Mcl-1 expression, as well as inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in CML cells. In K562 cells and primary CML cells, imatinib induces endogenous Spred2 expression. Spred2 silencing by stable RNA interference partly protects K562 cells against imatinib-induced apoptosis. Together, these data implicate Spred2 in imatinib-induced cytotoxicity in CML cells, possibly by inhibiting the Ras-ERK cascade and the pro-survival signaling molecules SPHK1 and Mcl-1. These findings reveal potential targets for selective therapy of CML. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • A Solution to the I11-Conditioned GPS Positioning Problem in an Urban Environment

    Chang, Tsai-Hsin   Wang, Li-Sheng   Chang, Fan-Ren

For GPS positioning, it is normally required that there be at least four GPS satellites in view. However, due to the frequent blockage of signals in an urban environment, it is difficult to meet that requirement; therefore, the operation of the GPS receiver may be interrupted. How to deal with this problem so that the service can be continuous is the main theme of this paper. The pseudorange predictor and the receiver clock bias predictor may be used to estimate the pseudorange and clock bias, respectively. The altitude-hold algorithm is developed to provide additional information under the assumption that the altitude of the vehicle is approximately a constant, which is deemed appropriate for urban applications. Furthermore, for land vehicles, it may be assumed that the speed of the vehicle is not significantly varying so that the constraint-filtering method with soft constraint may be applied. The integration of these methods yields a successful algorithm to manage the ill-conditioned positioning problem if the number of visible satellites drops to below 4. From both static and dynamic experimental results, it is shown that the proposed methodology indeed gives rise to an effective scheme that can sustain the service for a few minutes, even if there is no satellite in view at all.
