President Hitzman, members of the Society, ladies and gentlemen: I am greatly honored to have been selected as recipient of the Marsden Award, and to stand before you tonight to receive this tribute. Its customary in such ceremonies for the recipient to describe the events that led to the occasion, and, in keeping with that tradition, Ill describe how "I got here" by paying my own tribute to several important individuals. Let me start by acknowledging Richard Nielsen and John Thorns. Richard Nielsen headed up the Geologic Research Division of Kennecott Exploration, Inc., my employer out of graduate school, and I got my start in economic geology under his tutelage beginning in 1974. He encouraged me to join SEG and wrote one of my supporting letters. Dick and I stayed in touch after we each left Kennecott and went on to other endeavors. My greatest SEG involvement began when Dick conceived of the idea of SEGs first stand-alone conference ("SEG93") and asked me in 1991 to be the conference Treasurer. Through SEG93, I was exposed to the full cadre of SEG insiders and was asked to stay on as Treasurer in 1994, a role that I accepted and maintained through 2001. Dick has remained a good friend, colleague, and supporter for over 30 years, and it was Dick who nominated me for the Marsden Award. Thank you, Dick, Ive always enjoyed and appreciated your support.

President Price, members of the Society, ladies and gentlemen: I remember the sad day in 1986 when Ralph Marsden died. It happened during the annual meeting of the Society in San Antonio and Ralph, a key figure in the affairs of the Society, was greatly missed. He was treasurer to the Society, the Foundation, and the Economic Geology Publishing Company. He was conservative, hard working, efficient, and modest. I am the first to admit that I am not cast in the same mold as Ralph, but I am greatly honored to have been selected to receive the medal and for it to bear the name of Ralph Marsden. It was …
