  • Spatio-temporal evolution of the L -> H and H -> L transitions

    Miki, K.   Diamond, P. H.   Fedorczak, N.   Guercan, Oe D.   Malkov, M.   Lee, C.   Kosuga, Y.   Tynan, G.   Xu, G. S.   Estrada, T.   McDonald, D.   Schmitz, L.   Zhao, K. J.

    Understanding the L -> H and H -> L transitions is crucial to successful ITER operation. In this paper we present novel theoretical and modelling study results on the spatio-temporal dynamics of the transition. We place a special emphasis on the role of zonal flows and the micro -> macro connection between dynamics and the power threshold (P-T) dependences. The model studied evolves five coupled fields in time and one space dimension, in simplified geometry. The content of this paper is (a) the model fundamentals and the space-time evolution during the L -> I -> H transition, (b) the physics origin of the well-known del B-drift asymmetry in P-T, (c) the role of heat avalanches in the intrinsic variability of the L -> H transition, (d) the dynamics of the H -> L back transition and the physics of hysteresis, (e) conclusion and discussion, with a special emphasis on the implications of transition dynamics for the L -> H power threshold scalings.

  • Axion-Like Particles and the Higgs Decays h -> PZ and h -> Pl(+)l(-)

    An, Zhong-Yuan   Yue, Chong-Xing   Liu, Zhi-Cheng

    Axion-like particles (ALPs) are often defined as relatively light pseudoscalar particles and appear in many extensions of the Standard Model. Taking into account constraints on the free parameters from existing searches and explaining the g-2 deviation, we consider the contributions of ALPs with mass in the range of 1.5 GeV < m(a) < m(h) - m(z) to the exclusive Higgs decays h -> PZ and h -> Pl(+)l(-) with P being the pseudoscalar mesons pi(0), eta, eta', eta(c) and eta(b) in a model-independent approach. We find that, in most of the parameter space range, the contributions of ALP to these decay processes are very small, while in the case of the ALP mass m(a) approximately equaling the meson mass m(P), the contributions are significantly large.

  • Structural transition between $L^{p}(G)$ and $L^{p}(G/H)$

    Tavallaei, Narguess   Ramezanpour, Mohammad   Olfatian Gillan, Behrooz

    Let H be a compact subgroup of a locally compact group G. We consider the homogeneous space G/H equipped with a strongly quasi-invariant Radon measure mu. For 1 <= p <= +infinity, we introduce a norm decreasing linear map from L-p(G) onto L-p(G/H, mu) and show that L-p(G/H, mu) may be identified with a quotient space of L-p(G). Also, we prove that L-p(G/H, mu) is isometrically isomorphic to a closed subspace of L-p(G). These help us study the structure of the classical Banach spaces constructed on a homogeneous space via those created on topological groups.

  • Understanding L–H transition in tokamak fusion plasmas

    XU, Guosheng; WU, Xingquan

    This paper reviews the current state of understanding of the L-H transition phenomenon in tokamak plasmas with a focus on two central issues: (a) the mechanism for turbulence quick suppression at the L-H transition; (b) the mechanism for subsequent generation of sheared flow. We briefly review recent advances in the understanding of the fast suppression of edge turbulence across the L-H transition. We uncover a comprehensive physical picture of the L-H transition by piecing together a number of recent experimental observations and insights obtained from 1D and 2D simulation models. Different roles played by diamagnetic mean flow, neoclassical-driven mean flow, turbulence-driven mean flow, and turbulence-driven zonal flows are discussed and clarified. It is found that the L-H transition occurs spontaneously mediated by a shift in the radial wavenumber spectrum of edge turbulence, which provides a critical evidence for the theory of turbulence quench by the flow shear. Remaining questions and some key directions for future investigations are proposed.
