Field experiments of 42.7/128.1 Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexed, optical time-division multiplexed (WDM-OTDM) transmultiplexing and all-optical dual-wavelength regeneration at the OTDM rate are presented in this paper. By using the asynchronous retiming scheme, we achieve error-free bufferless data grooming with time-slot interchange capability for OTDM meshed networking. We demonstrate excellent performance from the system, discuss scalability, applicability, and the potential reach of the asynchronous retiming scheme for transparent OTDM-domain interconnection.

We review the progress on the various existing fibre-based solutions proposed to date to extend all-optical 2R regeneration to multi-channel operation. Our emphasis is on a bi-directional architecture based on offset filtering of an SPM-broadened spectrum.

An all-optical, all-fiberized technique for the elimination of timing jitter in short pulse transmission systems is experimentally demonstrated. The technique is based on pulse shaping in a superstructured fiber Bragg grating and optical switching in a nonlinear optical loop mirror.

We experimentally demonstrate a compact four-wave-mixing-based multiwavelength converter based on a 2.2-m-long W-type dispersion flattened lead–silicate fiber. Simultaneous wavelength conversion of three 40-Gb/s differential phase-shift-keyed signals with a power penalty below 2 dB is achieved. Due to the high stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold of the fiber, no SBS suppression schemes are required for the continuous-wave pump.
