    5-Azadibenzo[a,g] corannulene, the first azacorannulene with a nitrogen on the rim, has been synthesized in seven steps from 4-bromoisoquinoline. The strained pyridine ring opens thermally to a polycyclic aromatic nitrile and hydrolytically to an amino aldehyde with the same polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon framework.

    We investigate whether the total character of a finite group G is a polynomial in a suitable irreducible character of G. When (G, Z(G)) is a generalized Camina pair, we show that the total character is a polynomial in a faithful irreducible character of G if and only if Z(G) is cyclic.

  • A configurable high frequency G(m)-C filter using a novel linearized G(m)

    A large-signal linearization method for operational transconductance amplifiers (OTA) using a combination of cross-coupled quadratic cell and a novel non-linear current injection technique is presented in this paper. Post-layout simulations show that for 180 nm CMOS process with a 1.8 V power supply, total harmonic distortion (THD) at 1.5 V peak-to-peak and 5 kHz input is less than -46 dB. Also, the dynamic range (DR) at given THD is 68 dB with power consumption of 0.64 mW. To verify the performance, the proposed OTA is used to design a new configurable filter in high-frequency range using N-path filter methodology. Universal Butterworth G(m)-C active filters are embedded in the proposed 4-path filter, which makes it possible to change the type and order of the filter by means of four digital bits. The center frequency of the proposed 4-path filter can be tuned from 100 MHz to 3.5 GHz. The final filter is designed to achieve a voltage gain of 0 dB, in-band input third-order intercept point (IIP3) of +2.5 dBm and a total NF of 2.6 dB. Post-layout simulation results of the first-order filter show a THD of -44 dB with a 5 kHz input tone and 614 mV peak-to-peak swing. (C) 2019 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

    Let G be a finite abelian p-group, Gamma the maximal Z-order of Z[G]. We prove that the 2-primary torsion subgroups of K-2(Z[G]) and K-2 (Gamma) are isomorphic when p 3, 5, 7 (mod 8), and K-2(Z[G]) circle times z Z[1/p] is isomorphic to K-2(Gamma) circle times z Z[1/p] when p =3D 2, 3, 5, 7. As an application, we give the structure of K-2(Z[G]) for G a cyclic p-group or an elementary abelian p-group.

  • A SMALL VALUE ESTIMATE FOR G(a) x G(m)

    A small value estimate is a statement providing necessary conditions for the existence of certain sequences of non-zero polynomials with integer coefficients taking small values at points of an algebraic group. Such statements are desirable for applications to transcendental number theory to analyze the outcome of the construction of an auxiliary function. In this paper, we present a result of this type for the product G(a) x G(m) whose underlying group of complex points is C x C*. It shows that if a certain sequence of non-zero polynomials in Z[X-1, X-2] takes small values at a point (xi, eta) together with their first derivatives with respect to the invariant derivation partial derivative/partial derivative X-1 + X-2 (partial derivative/partial derivative X-2),X- then both xi and eta are algebraic over Q. The precise statement involves growth conditions on the degree and norm of these polynomials as well as on the absolute values of their derivatives. It improves on a direct application of Philippon's criterion for algebraic independence and compares favorably with constructions coming from Dirichlet's box principle.

    This defense of my essay on Vitoria and Suarez argues that my use of the term "religious war" is based on religious authority at least as much as religious cause, and that Davis's decision to discuss only Vitoria limits his ability to come to terms with my thesis. To Davis's argument that for Vitoria war was justified against the Indians only as a necessity of simple justice and to protect the innocent, I argue that his disjunction between simple justice and religious cause is a false one that fails to come to term with the church's primary reason for approaching Indians, with the Thomistic understanding of the relation between nature and grace and between reason and revelation, and with the distinction between what justice requires in relation to the church and Christians and what it requires for others. I explain finally that my claim is not that the Catholic political rulers readily responded to papal calls for war except when it was in their interest, but that papal war was central to the normative just-war tradition of the church in canon law and among major theologians like Vitoria and Suarez.

  • Some properties of LUC (X,G) as a banach left LUC (G)-module

    Associated with a locally compact group G and a G-space X there is a Banach subspace LUC(X,G) of Cb(X), which has been introduced and studied by Chu and Lau (Math Z 268:649-673,2011). In this paper, we study some properties of the first dual space of LUC(X,G). In particular, we introduce a left action of LUC(G) on LUC(X,G) to make it a Banach left module and then we investigate the Banach subalgebra Z(X,G) of LUC(G), as the topological centre related to this module action, which contains M(G) as a closed subalgebra. Also, we show that the faithfulness of this module action is related to the properties of the action of G on X and we prove an analogue of the main result of Lau (Math Proc Cambridge Philos Soc 99:273-283,1986) for G-spaces. Sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the equality Z(X,G)=3DM(G) or LUC(G) are given. Finally, we apply our results to some special cases of G and X for obtaining various examples whose topological centres Z(X,G) are M(G), LUC(G) or neither of them.

    The search for general processes that underlie intelligence in nonhumans has followed two strategies: one that concerns observing differences between nonhuman species (G), the second that concerns observing individual differences within a nonhuman species (g). This commentary takes issue with both attempts to mark a general factor: Differential responding to contextual variables compromises the search for G, and the lack of predictive validity compromises g.
