    Editorial How to deal with climate change,how to mitigate or even reverse it,maybe the hottest scientific topic of the 21st century.Do you know that a Chinese scientist and his team contributed to climate change control by reducing PM2.5 in diesel car exhaust by 35-40%?That scientist is Prof.Lin Li,a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and founder of the Laser Processing Research Centre at The University of Manchester,United Kingdom.Of course,this is only one example of Professor Li's scientific achievements.As a pioneer of microsphere super-resolution lens,his team,in collaboration with Singapore colleagues,broke the optical diffraaion limit in optical microscopic imaging,making real-time observation of biological viruses without interference possible.He also used lasers to synthesize new nanomaterials which kill drug-resistant bacteria while remaining harmless to healthy human cells,which led to the development and breakthrough of related research fields.We are much honored to have Professor Lin Li for an exclusive interview in which he recalls his years of scientific research experience and talks about the future development trend of laser material processing.

    <正>Yixun Lin, male, expert in operations research. He was born in Taishan City, Guangdong Province in December 1937. From 1956 to 1961, he studied in the Mathematics Department of Wuhan University. After graduation, he was assigned to teach in the Department of Mathematics of Zhengzhou University. He became a lecturer in 1979, an associate professor in 1982, a professor in 1986, and meanwhile the director of the teaching and research section of operational research.

  • A chip scale lin perpendicular to lin quasi-bichromatic laser scheme

    We present a chip scale lin perpendicular to lin quasi-bichromatic laser beam generator scheme and our experimental study results. Through modulating two vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with the same microwave, both VCSELs output multichromatic lasers and every frequency component in their outputs contributes for the frequency mutual injection locking between VCSELs. The system outputs a lin perpendicular to lin quasi-bichromatic laser beam in which the two wanted frequency components share more than 90% of the total laser power. It is promising to apply the chip device in the chip scale coherent population trapping (CPT) atomic clock and the chip scale CPT magnetometer. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
