ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL? Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, Houston, TX, was elected President of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) at its annual business meeting in San Diego, CA. He succeeds Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, St. Louis, MO. Newly elected members of the Executive Council serving with Dr. Pollock include: • Nicholas J. Petrelli, MD, Newark, DE, President-elect; • William G. Cance, MD, Gainesville, FL, Vice President; • Mitchell C. Posner, MD, Chicago, IL, Treasurer; • Peter W. T. Pisters, MD, Houston, TX, and Lisa A. Newman, MD, Ann Arbor, MI, Council Members; • David L. Bartlett, MD, Pittsburgh, PA, Councillor-at-Large. Dr. Raphael E. Pollock: SSO President Dr. Pollock is the Head, Division of Surgery; Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, where he also holds the Senator Aiken Jr., Distinguished Chair. In addition, he is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Section of Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Dr. Pollock previously served on the Executive Council as Vice President and Secretary, is past chair of the Membership Committee and has served on the ad-hoc Planning Committee. He has represented SSO as a member of the American College of Surgeons’ Board of Governors, and chaired the SSO Continuing Medical Education and Scientific Program Committees. Dr. Pollock also served on the Editorial Board of Annals of Surgical Oncology, SSO’s peer-reviewed medical journal. Dr. Pollock earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed a General Surgery Residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, then a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at M. D. Anderson. He later earned a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Dr. Nicholas J. Petrelli: SSO President-elect Dr. Petrelli is Medical Director of the Helen H. Graham Cancer Center, Christiana Care, Wilmington, DE, and Professor of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. Currently SSO’s Vice President, Dr. Petrelli served two previous three-year terms on the Executive Council. He is former Chair of the Corporate Relations, Continuing Medical Education, and Examination Committees; served on the Scientific Program, Training Program Directors, and Nominating Committees; and spent five years on the James Ewing Foundation Board of Directors. He also chaired the James Ewing Clinical Research Award Committee and was Section Editor (Gastrointestinal) for Annals of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Petrelli earned his medical degree at Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, LA. He completed residency training at St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center, San Francisco, CA, and a surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY. Dr. Petrelli also completed a Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (International Union Against Cancer, or UICC) Fellowship in Milan, Italy. Dr. William G. Cance: SSO Vice President Dr. Cance is Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Professor in the school’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is completing a three-year term as SSO Treasurer and has served as a member of the Executive Council since 1999. He also serves on the Annals’ Editorial Board and is the Journal’s Section Editor, Laboratory Research. Dr. Cance is former Chair of the Issues and Government Affairs, and Scientific Program Committees. Following his graduation from Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Cance completed residency training at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO, and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. Dr. Mitchell C. Posner: SSO Treasurer Dr. Posner is Professor and Chief, Section of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He is also Professor in the institution’s Cancer Research Center and Director of the SSO-approved Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program. An SSO member since 1992, Dr. Posner is a current member of the Executive Council and the Training Program Directors Committee. He previously served on the Membership, Nominating and Scientific Program Committees, and was Chair of the Program Committee for the Society’s 55th Annual Cancer Symposium in Denver, CO. Dr. Posner earned his medical degree from State University of New York, Buffalo, NY. He then completed a General Surgery Residency at the University of Colorado, Denver, and a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. Dr. Peter W. T. Pisters: SSO Executive Council Member Dr. Pisters is Professor of Surgery, Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. He is also Associate Director of the institution’s Sarcoma Center and Chief of the Sarcoma Service. Dr. Pisters served as the Councillor-at-Large on the SSO Executive Council from 2002 - 2005. He is a former Chair and member of the Training Committee, and served on the Membership and Nominating Committees. In addition, Dr. Pisters served as Associate Editor for the Bone and Soft Tissue Section of Annals of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Pisters received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada, and completed residency training at New York University Medical Center. He was a Clinical Research Fellow in the Surgical Metabolism Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he also completed his Surgical Oncology Fellowship. Dr. Lisa A. Newman: SSO Executive Council Member Dr. Newman is Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the Breast Care Center at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ann Arbor, MI. She is also on the Adjunct Surgery Staff at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Newman currently serves on the Annals’ Editorial Board, is Associate Editor of the Journal’s Breast Section, and has served as a manuscript reviewer since 1999. Dr. Newman earned her MD from, and completed her residency at, the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. She then completed a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. Dr. David L. Bartlett: SSO Councillor-at-Large Dr. Bartlett is Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery, at the University of Pittsburgh. An SSO member since 1993, he was Scientific Program Committee Chair for the Society’s 58th Annual Cancer Symposium in Atlanta. Dr. Bartlett graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and earned the Alpha Omega Alpha Sandoz Award for Academic Achievement. He completed residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. The Society of Surgical Oncology was founded in 1940 to broaden the study of cancer. Its nearly 2,000 members include physicians from several medical specialties, including colorectal surgery, general surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, head and neck surgery, medical oncology, neurosurgical oncology, orthopedic oncology, pathology, pediatric surgical oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiation oncology, thoracic surgical oncology, and urologic oncology.
