Abstract(summary):

Health effects associated with arsenic (As) intake are reviewed. Topics covered include: sources of As (including contaminated foods and drinking water) and its fate after entering the human body; acute and chronic As poisoning; clinical symptoms associated with different stages of As toxicity (including the fact that 6 months to 10 yr may be required for development of clinical symptoms associated with exposure to drinking water containing low concn. of As); dermatological symptoms of As poisoning; cardiovascular effects of As poisoning (including vascular damage associated with blackfoot disease, which is endemic in an area of Taiwan where most drinking water contains 0.17-0.8 p.p.m. As); gastrointestinal effects; carcinogenic effects; transformation of As in the human body; treatments for As-induced diseases and their limitations; the importance of improving drinking water quality in areas with high incidence of diseases associated with As intake; and conclusions.
