Discussion on the paper “Evaluation of dynamic fracture toughness KId by Hopkinson pressure bar loaded instrumented Charpy impact test” by Jiang Fengchun, Liu Ruitang, Zhang Xiaoxin, Kenneth S. Vecchio and Aashish Rohatgi, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 71 (2004) pp. 279–287
The article contains several drawbacks that could be misleading for an inexperienced reader. All tests reported in the discussed article were one-point-bending (1PB) ones. However, the authors neither noted this fact nor take it into account in their models (both simplified and finite element). A theoretical model proposed in the article has limited applicability for 1PB or 3PB tests with short time-to-fracture because for these tests the accuracy of the model is low and, additionally, its predictions are non-conservative. Finite element analysis (FEA) presented in the article contains several important drawbacks and hardly can be accepted as a test of accuracy for the model proposed
