•Penicillium sp. GR-68 was identified by morphological and molecular analyses.•Isolate GR-68 was identified as Penicillium georgiense.•This fungus was pathogenic on onion bulbs.•This is the first report of P. georgiense as a fungal pathogen of onion bulbs.
