  • Behavior Investigations of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters in Power Systems

    When electric power systems are interconnected in operation, the fault current levels increase. This problem can be solved by deploying a bus-tie Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) in distribution substations which allows two buses to be tied without significantly raising fault current levels. The Alternative Transient Program (ATP) version of Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP), ATPDraw and The Output Processor (TOP) are applied to investigate the operational behavior of the SFCL in a parallel connection of radial supply systems. The case study showed that an SFCL on bus tie location can not only suppress the fault current levels effectively but also improve the power quality and the reliability of the supply network.   • Amelogenins in Human Developing and Mature Dental Pulp

    Amelogenins are a group of heterogenous proteins first identified in developing tooth enamel and reported to be present in odontoblasts. The objective of this study was to elucidate the expression and function of amelogenins in the human dentin-pulp complex. Developing human tooth buds were immunostained for amelogenin, and mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization. The effects of recombinant amelogenins on pulp and papilla cell proliferation were measured by Brd U immunoassay, and differentiation was monitored by alkaline phosphatase expression. Amelogenin protein was found in the forming dentin matrix, and amelogenin mRNA was localized in the dentin, presumably in the odontoblast processes. Proliferation of papilla cells was enhanced by recombinant human amelogenin rH72 (LRAP+ exon 4), while pulp cells responded to both rH72 and rH58 (LRAP), with no effect by rH174. These studies suggest that odontoblasts actively synthesize and secrete amelogenin protein during human tooth development, and that low-molecular-weight amelogenins can enhance pulp cell proliferation.

A small compression mould was used to apply the different processing conditions (i.e. pressure, holding time and processing temperature). The consolidation quality of finished samples was characterized mainly through microscopic studies of the microstructure of the material associated with density measurements and evaluations of mechanical properties using a small transverse flexure testing facility.   • Manufacture of CF/PEEK composites from powder/sheath fibre preforms

    The relationships between impregnation mechanisms, consolidation quality and processing conditions during manufacture of carbon fibre/polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites from powder/sheath fibre bundle preforms were investigated. Microscopy of cross-sections and density measurements were used to examine the quality of impregnation and consolidation. The consolidation process of composite laminates made from these material preforms can basically be divided into two steps: compaction and impregnation. Variations of void content in the laminates as a function of both bundle geometry and combinations of processing variables were estimated using an impregnation model. Effects of variations in bundle geometry and shape ratio on impregnation behaviour are discussed. Results of transverse flexure tests were used to correlate mechanical properties with impregnation quality, in particular the void content in the laminates. Finally, the optimum processing windows for the manufacture of laminates from CF/PEEK-3k and -6k preforms are suggested.
