  • Study of n-n correlations in d + H-2 -> p plus p plus n plus n reaction

    Konobeevsky, E.   Kasparov, A.   Mordovskoy, M.   Zuyev, S.   Lebedev, V.   Spassky, A.

    A kinematically complete measurement of the four -body breakup reaction d+H-2 ->(2)p(S)+(2)n(S)-> p +p +n +n has been performed at 15 MeV deuteron beam of the SINP MSU. The two protons and neutron were detected at angles close to those of emission of (2)p(S) and (2)n(S) systems. The energy of singlet dineutron state was determined by comparing experimental TOF spectrum of breakup neutrons with simulated spectra depending on this energy. A low value E-nn =3D 0.076 +/- 0.006 keV obtained by fitting procedure apparently indicates an effective enhancement of nn -interaction in the intermediate state of studied reaction.

  • P- Terthienyl-Functionalized Dithieno[ 3,2-b:2',3'- d]-phospholes

    Chua, Chris Jansen   Ren, Yi   Stolar, Monika   Xing, Shirley   Linder, Thomas   Baumgartner, Thomas

    A series of dithienophospholes with different P-thienyl substituents have been synthesized and characterized. Alkyl groups at the 2,6-positions of the scaffold were introduced for solubility, but were found to also prevent stacking with this scaffold. Whereas a simple thienyl does not affect the overall photophysics of the dithienophosphole, the installation of terthienyl units creates a considerable subchromophore that can communicate through the phosphole-typical sigma*-* orbital interaction with the main scaffold. The overall architecture of the terthienyl was also found to have a significant impact on the photophysics of the system. Although a heavily twisted, branched terthienyl does not allow for any intermolecular -stacking interaction, the exposed nature of a linear terthiophene does, and gives rise to the formation of excimers in solution, as evident in shifted emission properties as a function of the concentration. Time-dependent DFT calculations have revealed that in this case, the terthienyl group becomes the main chromophore and the dithienophosphole only plays a supportive role.

  • D IGITAL V ISIBILITY OF P URCHASES

    Lauren Rhue   Arun Sundararajan

    As consumer behaviors progressively occur via technology, consumer decisions are likely influenced by the visibility and the concomitant social pressures afforded by technology. This research empirically investigates how the acknowledgement of visible behaviors affects consumers’ future visibility and shapes product choices using the purchases on a social network devoted to purchases. Fixed effects and propensity matching techniques are employed to control for the endogeneity in acknowledgement and future product choices. Evidence suggests that acknowledged visibility creates a tension between short term conformity and long-term differentiation. Furthermore, there is evidence of both conformity and differentiation depending on the commenter relationship and comment polarity, indicating a nuanced relationship between feedback and future purchase decisions.

    IN a further tribute to Peter David Storie-Pugh (VR, November 5, 2011, vol 169, p 500), Michael Pugh writes: Peter died peacefully at home in Salvagnac, France, on the morning of October 20, after a life of service to the veterinary professions both in Britain and in Europe. Entering retirement late, he chose to spend those years in France. Sadly, he was severely injured in a traffic accident early in that period and his last years were spent in indifferent health and considerable physical disablement, bravely born with a spirit no doubt honed by his Second World War years of incarceration in Colditz. Through his years as president of the BVA, twice, of the RCVS and as founding president of the Federation of Veterinarians of the EEC, as …

  • A Perturbative QCD Approach to pi(-) p -> D- Lambda(+)(c)

    Kofler, Stefan   Schweiger, Wolfgang

    We employ the generalized parton picture to analyze the reaction pi(-) p -> D- Lambda(+)(c). Thereby it is assumed that the process amplitude factorizes into one for the perturbatively calculable subprocess (u) over baru -> (c) over barc and hadronic matrix elements that can be parameterized in terms of generalized parton distributions for the pi(-) -> D- and p -> Lambda(+)(c) transitions, respectively. Representing these parton distributions in terms of valence-quark light-cone wave functions for pi, D, p and Lambda(c) allows us to make numerical predictions for unpolarized differential and integrated cross sections as well as spin observables. In the kinematical region where this approach is supposed to work, i.e. s greater than or similar to 20GeV(2) and in the forward hemisphere, the resulting cross sections are of the order of nb. This is a finding that could be of interest in view of plans to measure pi(-) p -> D- Lambda(+)(c), e.g., at J-PARC or COMPASS.
