The paper presents a description of the work of detection and identification of frequency lines in the Virgo dark fringe data from run C7. A number of methods are highlighted by which noise frequency lines are detected by data analysis and measurements in the laboratory. In this paper we give a description of the list of noise line candidates provided by the pulsar search analysis, the investigation of 10 Hz ( and harmonics) noise, violin modes, noise from the end station buildings' air conditioners, sidebands in calibration lines and aliasing in the 4 kHz reconstructed data.

  • Effects of misalignments and beam jitters in interferometric gravitational wave detectors

    Barone, F.   Calloni, E.   Di Fiore, L.   Grado, A.   Hello, P.   Milano, L.   Russo, G.

We present a calculation of the phase noise in a recycled interferometer with Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms, induced by the coupling of the geometrical fluctuations of the input laser with geometrical asymmetries of the interferometer. By comparison with the shot-noise limit planned for long-baseline interferometric gravitational wave detectors, upper limits in interferometer misalignments are established

Beam asymmetry and differential cross-section for the reaction gamma p -> eta p were measured from production threshold to 1500MeV photon laboratory energy. The two dominant neutral decay modes of the eta-meson, eta -> 2 gamma and eta -> 3 pi(0) , were analyzed. The full set of measurements is in good agreement with previously published results. Our data were compared with three models. They all fit satisfactorily the results but their respective resonance contributions are quite different. The possible photoexcitation of a narrow state N(1670) was investigated and no evidence was found.

  • Numerical simulation of steady planar die swell for a Newtonian fluid using the spectral element method

    Russo, G.   Phillips, T. N.

This paper is concerned with two dimensional numerical simulations of plane extrusion of a Newtonian fluid. The problem is discretized using the spectral element method and the free surface is evolved according to an ALE treatment. Numerical simulations are performed over a wide range of Reynolds and Weber numbers to highlight the effects of inertia and surface tension, respectively. Convergence of the numerical approximations with respect to polynomial order is demonstrated for the sensitive measures of free surface location and downstream relaxation distance. The higher the inertia the further downstream the relaxation occurs. Numerical results show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with predictions of other numerical schemes and experiments. • Experimental analysis of the "Saint Andrea" Masonry Bell Tower in Venice. A new method for the determination of "Tower Global Young's Modulus E"

    Russo, G.   Bergamo, O.   Damiani, L.   Lugato, D.

In this paper an 1800's masonry tower is analyzed, in order to assess its structural behavior and the frequency of vibrations to the structure. This paper details the experimental analyses performed to define its existing state. The movement of the tower is Subject to the actions produced by the motion of the three bells and the effects of the bells are analyzed. The heterogeneity of the soil has acted in a manner to determine the failures. The comparison demand versus capacity confirms the susceptibility of this type of structure to extensive damage and possible collapse, which has been frequently observed. The dynamic behavior of the bells is investigated and the vibration frequency to the structure. The analytical and numerical models adopted to interpret the experimental results, have all confirmed that the first harmonic frequency of oscillation of the largest bell is very close to the first eigen-frequency of the bell tower. The comparison is performed between the experimental methods of investigation: by ambient noise, by the movement of the bells and by vibrations due to an instrumental hammer. It is found that the one based on the movement of bells is not available while the other two methods provided the same value. Consequently it is very probable that this value is a very accurate experimental value of the frequency. It is possible to obtain an equivalent global elastic modulus E of the tower. Such a modulus can be obtained by applying Rayleigh's method, for various E values, until the obtained analytical frequency coincides with the above-mentioned experimental accurate value. By utilizing the E modulus so determined in F.E.M. analysis of the tower a theoretical first fundamental frequencies is determined which coincides with the previous determinate experimental frequencies. This confirms that the global elastic modulus E that determined is the exact value of Young's modulus of the tower. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Impulse formulation of the Euler equations: general properties and numerical methods

    Russo, G.   Smereka, P.

The gauge freedom of the incompressible Euler equations is explored. We present various forms of the Euler equations written in terms of the impulse density. It is shown that these various forms are related by a gauge transformation. We devise a numerical method to solve the impulse form of the Euler equations in a variety of gauges. The numerical scheme is implemented both in two and three space dimensions. Numerical results are presented showing that the impulse density tends to concentrate on sheets

  • Effect of partial substitution of Rh catalysts with Pt or Pd during the partial oxidation of methane in the presence of sulphur RID C-7090-2011

    Cimino, S.   Lisi, L.   Russo, G.   Torbati, R.

The effect of the partial substitution of Rh/La-Al(2)O(3) monolith catalysts with either Pt or Pd during the catalytic partial oxidation of methane in the presence of H(2)S under self-sustained high-temperature conditions was investigated. The catalysts were fully characterized by BET, SEM-EDS, SO(2)-TPD and in situ DRIFT spectroscopy of adsorbed CO at room temperature, which was used to study changes on the surface state of Rh before and after exposures to sulphur species at temperatures and conditions close to those expected under actual CPO of methane. Both steady state and transient operation of the CPO reactor were investigated particularly with regards to poisoning/regeneration cycles and low-temperature light-off phase. The partial substitution of Rh with Pt was shown to reduce the detrimental effect of S, which strongly inhibits the steam reforming reaction on monometallic Rh catalyst. DRIFT experiments indicate that sulphur acts as a selective poison by preferentially adsorbing on smaller well-dispersed Rh crystallites while larger metallic Rh sites are mostly unaffected; the presence of Pt or Pd does not directly influence the way S adsorbs on highly dispersed Rh sites. During the autumn of 2006 a final test of a sample of double-stack MRPC (Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber) strips, randomly chosen from two years of mass production (the ALICE Time-Of-Flight detector is made of 1638 strips), was carried out at the CERN Proton Synchrotron facility. The results on the performances of the MRPCs and of the front-end and readout electronics will be presented. it is confirmed that these devices have a very good uniformity of response, a long streamer-free plateau, an efficiency higher than 99% and an "intrinsic" time resolution better than about 40 ps.
