  • A significação em Portais e a Abside, de Celso Loureiro Chaves

    Pereira, Flávio Santos

An analysis of the solo guitar piece Portals and the Apse by Celso Loureiro Chaves (1997) is undertaken in this article. The analysis follows the principles of the new musicology, as put into practice by authors such as Lawrence Kramer and Rose Subotnik. The starting point of the analysis and its guiding line are the evidences left behind by the composer, namely the entirely serial nature of the work; the relationship of its formal scheme with "the architectural plan of an imaginary temple, that could be located on Prospero's island as drawn by Peter Greenaway for his film Prospero's Books "; the reference of the central section of the work to the memory of a "distant reading of the novel The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, by Guimarães Rosa." From these evidences we seek to draw a context that aims at illuminating the work and unveiling the depth of its meaning.

  • Policy enforcement by end user review

Embodiments are disclosed that relate to enforcement of user policies in a multi-user interactive computing environment by end user review. For example, one disclosed embodiment provides, on a computing device, a method comprising receiving a notification of a current policy controversy, and sending information regarding the current policy controversy to each end user reviewer of a plurality of end user reviewers, each end user reviewer being a member of an enforcement federation of a plurality of enforcement federations. The method further comprises receiving enforcement decisions from one or more responding end user reviewers of the plurality of end user reviewers, and if the enforcement decisions received meet an enforcement threshold, then automatically enforcing a policy rule.

  • Computer-implemented engineering review of energy consumption by equipment

A computer-implemented system and method are disclosed for performing engineering review of energy consumption by one or more equipment. One or more computers are connected to a specifications database. The computers are configured to receive end-user configurations corresponding to first equipment; retrieve one or more second equipment, as well as second equipment specifications from the specifications database; calculate an invoicing statement for the second equipment; and provide an engineering review report of the energy savings realized by implementing the second equipment. The first equipment may be an existing equipment, while the second equipment is one or more energy-efficient replacement alternatives to the first equipment. Each step is performed in real-time, using automated software modules and sub-modules. The engineering review report is applicable as an instant approval or pre-approval, qualifying the end-user for purchase incentives, which apply when the energy-efficient equipment alternatives are adopted by the end-user.

  • Stabilization of betalains by encapsulation-a review

    Castro-Enriquez, D. D.   Montano-Leyva, B.   Del Toro-Sanchez, C. L.   Juarez-Onofre, J. E.   Carvajal-Millan, E.   Burruel-Ibarra, S. E.   Tapia-Hernandez, J. A.   Barreras-Urbina, C. G.   Rodriguez-Felix, F.

Betalains are pigments that have properties that benefit health, such as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial activity, and they also possess a high ability to provide color. However, these pigments, although used as colorants in certain foods, have not been able to be potentialized to diverse areas such as pharmacology, due to their instability to physicochemical factors such as high temperature, pH changes and high water activity. For this reason, different stabilization methods have been reported. The method that has presented best results for diversifying the use of betalains has been encapsulation. Encapsulation is a method of entrapment where the objective is to protect a compound utilizing more stable matrices from encapsulation technologies. This method has been employed to provide greater stability to betalains, using different matrices and encapsulation technologies. However, a review does not exist, to our knowledge, which analyzes the effect of matrices and encapsulation technologies on betalains stabilization. Therefore, the objective of this review article was to evaluate the different matrices and encapsulation techniques that have been employed to stabilize betalains, in order to arrive at specific conclusions concerning the effect of encapsulation on their stabilization and to propose new techniques and matrices that could promote their stabilization.

  • Phytotoxins eliminated by milk: a review

    Lopes, Jos=C3=A9 Radm=C3=A1cyo G.   Riet-Correa, Franklin   Medeiros, Rosane M.T.

ABSTRACT: Milk is a complex emulsion of lipids suspended in aqueous protein solution that can be a carrier of various contaminants, but generally it is not an important route of toxic excretion. The main problem is chronic repetitive exposure, as it occurs with ingestion of toxic plants and its potential danger to animals that consume the milk. Previously reported hazardous phytotoxins eliminated by milk include: indolizidine alkaloids, causing oligosaccharide storage disease; piperidine alkaloids, causing acute poisoning or malformations; pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which cause hepatic lesions; quinolizidine alkaloids, as a cause of skeletal defects; glucosinolates, which cause changes in the thyroid; tremetol (or tremetone), which causes a disease characterized by tremors in animals and milk sickness in humans; sodium monofluoracetate, which causes the death of kids after ingestion of colostrum from goats that have ingested Amorimia septentrionalis during gestation; ptaquiloside, which induces carcinogenesis in animals that ingest milk or derivatives produced by animals that have ingested Pteridium spp. Ipomoea asarifolia, which contains indole diterpenes causing tremors in suckling pups. Chrysocoma ciliata causes alopecia in suckling pups, but its toxic compound is still unknown. Knowledge about the risk of exposure to these substances via milk and its dissemination are important for veterinary and human health.=09

  • Hemolysis by surfactants - A review

Manaargadoo-Catin, Magalie   Ali-Cherif, Anais   Pougnas, Jean-Luc   Perrin, Catherine

An overview of the use of surfactants for erythrocyte lysis and their cell membrane action mechanisms is given. Erythrocyte membrane characteristics and its association with the cell cytoskeleton are presented in order to complete understanding of the erythrocyte membrane distortion. Cell homeostasis disturbances caused by surfactants might induce changes starting from shape modification to cell lysis. Two main mechanisms are hypothesized in literature which are osmotic lysis and lysis by solubilization even if the boundary between them is not clearly defined. Another specific mechanism based on the formation of membrane pores is suggested in the particular case of saponins. The lytic potency of a surfactant is related to its affinity for the membrane and the modification of the lipid membrane curvature. This is to be related to the surfactant shape defined by its hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties but also by experimental conditions. As a consequence, prediction of the hemolytic potency of a given surfactant is challenging. Several studies are focused on the relation between surfactant erythrolytic potency and their physico-chemical parameters such as the critical micellar concentration (CMC), the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB), the surfactant membrane/water partition coefficient (K) or the packing parameter (P). The CMC is one of the most important factors considered even if a lytic activity cut-off effect points out that the only consideration of CMC not enough predictive. The relation K.CMC must be considered in addition to the CMC to predict the surfactant lytic capacity within the same family of non ionic surfactant. Those surfactant structure/lytic activity studies demonstrate the requirement to take into account a combination of physicochemical parameters to understand and foresee surfactant lytic potency. • Microorganism preservation by convective air-drying-A review

    Tan, D. T.   Poh, P. E.   Chin, S. K.

At present, microorganisms are mainly preserved by freeze-drying. There is, however, lack of studies conducted on various cheaper yet promising convective air-drying alternatives. Convective air-drying has been proven to produce dried culture with comparable cell survival and final moisture content to that of freeze-drying. This paper aims to draw an understanding to application and suitability of convective air-drying which includes spray, oven, heat pump, fluidized bed, conveyor, and rotary drying to preserve microorganisms. The paper concludes that drying near ambient temperature and the addition of dehydration protectants are important to obtain satisfactory drying quality.
