  • A new amino alcohol N

Mohammad Hakimi   Sheida Ahmadi   Zahra Mardani   Fabian Mohr

In the present work a new ligand, 2-(2-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)ethylamino)ethanol (L), and its Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, [Zn(L)Br2] (1), [Cd(L)Br2] (2) and [Cd(L)I2] (3), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, Raman and 1H NMR spectroscopies as well as X-ray crystallography. All complexes are isostructural and their metal ions have distorted square pyramidal geometry with an MN3X2 (X: Br, I) environment. During the complexation process, the amine group of the ligand becomes a chiral center. In the solid-state, an R-configuration was observed in all three complexes. Furthermore, the molecules form intermolecular C–H⋯O, C–H⋯X and O–H⋯X (X: Br, I) hydrogen bonds in the solid-state.

  • A novel inhibitor of N

N-methyladenosine(mA) modification is critical for m RNA splicing, nuclear export, stability and translation. Fat mass and obesity-associated protein(FTO), the first identified m6 A demethylase,is critical for cancer progression. Herein, we developed small-molecule inhibitors of FTO by virtual screening, structural optimization, and bioassay. As a result, two FTO inhibitors namely 18077 and 18097 were identified, which can selectively inhibit demethylase activity of FTO. Specifically, 18097 bound to the active site of FTO and then inhibited cell cycle process and migration of cancer cells. In addition, 18097 reprogrammed the epi-transcriptome of breast cancer cells, particularly for genes related to P53 pathway. 18097 increased the abundance of m6 A modification of suppressor of cytokine signaling1(SOCS1) m RNA, which recruited IGF2 BP1 to increase m RNA stability of SOCS1 and subsequently activated the P53 signaling pathway. Further, 18097 suppressed cellular lipogenesis via downregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma(PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha(C/EBPa), and C/EBPβ. Animal studies confirmed that 18097 can significantly suppress in vivo growth and lung colonization of breast cancer cells. Collectively, we identified that FTO can work as a potential drug target and the small-molecule inhibitor 18097 can serve as a potential agent against breast cancer.

  • Co-design of a Smart Cajón

Turchet, Luca; McPherson, Andrew; Barthet, Mathieu

Smart Instruments are a novel family of musical instruments that embed sensors, actuators, wireless connectivity, and semantic audio technologies. This paper reports the findings of a participatory design approach to develop a Smart Cajon, a box-shaped percussion instrument with Internet of Musical Things components. Five initial co-design sessions were conducted with different professional cajon player participants. The players were invited to devise tangible mock-ups by placing provided sensors on an acoustic cajon and to express desirable use cases and interactions. We then designed and implemented a prototype satisfying performers' common requirements. The prototype was assessed using the concurrent think-aloud protocol and semi-structured interviews. Overall, the smart qualities of the prototype and their potential received positive feedback, and areas of improvements related to expressive control and personalization were highlighted.

  • Highest rank of a polytope for A(n)

Cameron, Peter J.   Fernandes, Maria Elisa   Leemans, Dimitri   Mixer, Mark

We prove that the highest rank of a string C-group constructed from an alternating group An is 3 if n=3D5, 4 if n=3D9, 5 if n=3D10, 6 if n=3D11, and (n-1)/2 if n12. Moreover, if n=3D3,4,6,7, or 8, the group An is not a string C-group. This solves a conjecture made by the last three authors in 2012.

  • A Convergent 1/N Expansion for GUE

    Kopelevitch, Offer

We show that the asymptotic 1/N expansion for the averages of linear statistics of the GUE is convergent when the test function is an entire function of order two and finite type. This allows to fully recover the mean eigenvalue density function for finite N from the coefficients of the expansion thus providing a resummation procedure. As an intermediate result, we compute the bilateral Laplace transform of the GUE reproducing kernel in the half-sum variable, generalizing a formula of Haagerup and ThorbjOrnsen.
