  • A fluorescent non-conventional organogelator with gelation-assisted piezochromic and fluoride-sensing properties

Li, Ruohan   Wang, Sa   Li, Qian   Lan, Haichuang   Xiao, Shuzhang   Li, Yaqian   Tan, Ronghua   Yi, Tao

A fluorescent non-conventional organogelator, 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, was found to be an integrated platform with multiple functionality. Balanced supramolecular interactions, based on pi-pi stacking between aromatic rings and intermolecular hydrogen bonding between neighboring imidazole rings, promote solvent gelation with a critical gelation concentration of 1.2 mg/mL (3.03 x 10(-3) mol/L) in cyclohexane. The intermolecular interactions can be modified by mechanical force, giving it piezochromic properties, and the xerogel has a much higher specific surface area, conferring higher sensitivity to pressure compared to the crystalline powder. The presence of imidazole in the gelator enables a selective response to fluoride anion. Addition of 0.3 equivalents of fluoride anion destroyed the gel (1.2 mg/mL), resulting in precipitation of a red solid that was isolated and identified by H-1 NMR and X-ray single crystal analysis. The red solid can be converted to the starting gelator molecule by addition of water to provide a recyclable chemosensor. This system represents a unique example of a simple organogelator with multiple functionality. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • A highly sensitive naked-eye fluorescent probe for trace hydrazine based on 'C-CN' bond cleavage

Xu, Hai   Huang, Zhen   Li, Yaqian   Gu, Biao   Zhou, Zile   Xie, Ruihua   Pang, Xiao   Li, Haitao   Zhang, Youyu

In this work, a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe, 2,3-bis(((E)-4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)maleonitrile (DHM), was developed based on N2H4-induced bond cleavage. Two cyanide groups of DHM were applied to sense hydrazine (N2H4) for the first time, which was demonstrated using H-1 NMR and HRMS spectra. The specific C-CN' bond cleavage induced by N2H4 showed an excellent fluorescence ratiometric behavior and a visible colorimetric change from purple to yellow. Meanwhile, it showed a low detection limit of 58.1 nM (1.65 ppb), which is far below the safety level (10 ppb) set by the U.S. EPA. Moreover, the probe was successfully employed for the quantitative detection toward N2H4 in real water samples.

  • Omics for understanding synergistic action of validamycin A and Trichoderma asperellum GDFS1009 against maize sheath blight pathogen

Wu, Qiong   Zhang, Lida   Xia, Hai   Yu, Chuanjin   Dou, Kai   Li, Yaqian   Chen, Jie

Sheath blight, causes by Rhizoctonia spp., threaten maize yield every year throughout the world. Trichoderma could degrade Rhizoctonia solani on maize mainly via competition and hyperparasitism, whereas validamycin A could efficiently inhibit the growth of R. solani via disturbing the energy system. By contrast, validamycin A is efficient but it takes effect in a short period, while Trichoderma takes effect in a long period though time-consuming. To overcome the disadvantages, Trichoderma asperellum GDFS1009 was used together with validamycin A. In vitro tests proved that the combined pathogen-inhibiting efficiency was significantly improved. Furthermore, results based on transcriptome and metabolome showed that validamycin A had no significant effects on growth, basic metabolism and main bio-control mechanisms of T. asperellum GDFS1009. Such few impacts may be attributed to detoxification and tolerance mechanism of T. asperellum GDFS1009. In addition, T. asperellum GDFS1009 has an ability to relieve the stress caused by validaymicn A. Meanwhile, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) results showed that only minor degradation (20%) of validamycin A was caused by T. asperellum GDFS1009 during cofermentation. All results together provide solid bases for validamycin A synergy with T. asperellum GDFS1009 in their combined biocontrol application.

  • Collective and personal self-esteem as mediators between perceived group discrimination and adjustment in Chinese migrant children

Jia, Xuji   Li, Yaqian   Su, Peng   Liu, Xia   Lin, Danhua

Previous studies have shown that perceived discrimination is negatively correlated with children's psychological development. However, how perceived group discrimination (PGD) leads to negative adjustment is not known. For 692 Chinese rural-to-urban migrant children, we examined the relations between PGD and both behavioral and emotional adaptation (antisocial behavior and positive affect), as mediated by collective self-esteem (CSE) and personal self-esteem (PSE). Children (50.7% boys; M-age =3D 13.37 years) completed questionnaires on PGD, antisocial behavior, positive affect, CSE, and PSE. PGD was positively associated with antisocial behavior and negatively associated with positive affect according to structural equation modeling. CSE and PSE accounted for some of the PGD related to antisocial behavior and fully accounted for PGD effects on positive affect. These findings suggested that the combination of CSE and PSE is a potential mechanism that underlies PGD associated with both antisocial behavior and positive affect.

  • Extreme learning machine with multi-structure and auto encoding receptive fields for image classification

Wu, Chao   Li, Yaqian   Zhao, Zhibiao   Liu, Bin

In order to adequately extract and utilize identifiable information in the image to improve classification accuracy, extreme learning machine with multi-structure and auto encoding receptive fields (ELM-MAERF) is proposed based on local receptive fields based extreme learning machine (ELM-LRF). The ELM-MAERF is mainly composed of two convolution-pooling layers, parallel encoders and classifier. In the two convolution-pooling layers, the local receptive fields and the fully connected receptive fields are trained by utilizing the theory of ELM autoencoder. The trained receptive fields are used to extract local features, multi-channel features and fully connected features. Parallel encoders are used to adequately encode and fuse these features. The classifier trained by the approximate empirical kernel map is used to classify the fusion features, which can effectively avoid the computational difficulties caused by processing large database. To demonstrate the effectiveness of ELM-MAERF, experiments are performed on four databases: Yale, MNIST, NORB and Caltech. The experimental results demonstrate the validity of trained receptive fields and structures in ELM-MAERF. Compared with the improved method based on ELM-LRF, the classification accuracy is improved by ELM-MAERF.

  • Magnetically controllable 3D microtissues based on magnetic microcryogels.

Liu, Wei   Li, Yaqian   Feng, Siyu   Ning, Jia   Wang, Jingyu   Gou, Maling   Chen, Huijun   Xu, Feng   Du, Yanan

Microtissues on the scale of several hundred microns are a promising cell culture configuration resembling the functional tissue units in vivo. In contrast to conventional cell culture, handling of microtissues poses new challenges such as medium exchange, purification and maintenance of the microtissue integrity. Here, we developed magnetic microcryogels to assist microtissue formation with enhanced controllability and robustness. The magnetic microcryogels were fabricated on-chip by cryogelation and micro-molding which could endure extensive external forces such as fluidic shear stress during pipetting and syringe injection. The magnetically controllable microtissues were applied to constitute a novel separable 3D co-culture system realizing functional enhancement of the hepatic microtissues co-cultured with the stromal microtissues and easy purification of the hepatic microtissues for downstream drug testing. The magnetically controllable microtissues with pre-defined shapes were also applied as building blocks to accelerate the tissue assembly process under magnetic force for bottom-up tissue engineering. Finally, the magnetic microcryogels could be injected in vivo as cell delivery vehicles and tracked by MRI. The injectable magnetic microtissues maintained viability at the injection site indicating good retention and potential applications for cell therapy. The magnetic microcryogels are expected to significantly promote the microtissues as a promising cellular configuration for cell-based applications such as in drug testing, tissue engineering and regenerative therapy. =20
