  • Biomimetic Total Synthesis of Rhodonoids C and D, and Murrayakonine D

Day, Aaron J.   Lamr, Hiu C.   Sumby, Christopher J.   George, Jonathan H.

A divergent, three-step total synthesis of rhodonoids C and D has been achieved using a biosynthetically inspired, acid-catalyzed cascade cyclization of an epoxychromene that involves the presumed intermediacy of o-quinone methides. Application of a similar strategy also allowed synthesis of the alkaloid murrayakonine D.

  • F. C. S. Schiller's Last Pragmatism Course

    Porrovecchio, Mark

This is a transcription of E C. S. Schiller's handwritten lecture notes for the pragmatism course he taught three times at the University of Southern California in the period 1933-35. His approach to pragmatism, often termed pragmatic humanism, was as idiosyncratic as the philosopher himself. Emphasizing and expanding upon the Jamesian, as against the Deweyian or Peircean, strains of pragmatism, Schiller sought to apply philosophy to a wide range of issues. Searching and witty where other philosophers of his day could be myopic and dry, Schiller urged that pragmatism was a living philosophy with truth-value accessible to all. The lecture notes serve as a useful reminder of his oft-neglected place in developing first generation pragmatism.

  • On the Fermat-type equation f(3)(z) plus f(3)(z plus c)=3D1

    Lu, Feng   Han, Qi

We study the non-existence of finite order meromorphic solutions to the Fermat-type difference equation f(3)(z)+ f(3)(z + c) =3D 1 over the complex plane C. An application to the unique range set problem is discussed.

  • Synthesis of the western half of breviones C, D, F and G

Francisco A. Mací   as, Ceferino Carrera, Nuria Chinchilla, Frank R. Fronczek, Juan C.G. Galindo

The enantioselective synthesis of the diterpenic moiety in the abeo-breviano skeleton is reported. The synthesis is carried out starting from 2-methyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione and EVK in eleven steps following a ring-expansion strategy once the tricyclic perhydrophenantrene skeleton has been obtained. A new Tiffeneau–Demjanov rearrangement under dark conditions is reported in which the insertion of the new methylene group is directed towards the most hindered side of the carbonyl group. This result is new and opposite to those reported in the literature under light (filtered or un-filtered wavelengths) conditions where insertion in the less hindered side is usually preferred.

  • $D$-module and $F$-module length of local cohomology modules

Katzman, Mordechai; Ma, Linquan; Smirnov, Ilya; Zhang, Wenliang

Let R be a polynomial or power series ring over a field k. We study the length of local cohomology modules H-I(j) (R) in the category of D-modules and F-modules. We show that the D-module length of H-I(j) (R) is bounded by a polynomial in the degree of the generators of I. In characteristic p > 0 we obtain upper and lower bounds on the F-module length in terms of the dimensions of Frobenius stable parts and the number of special primes of local cohomology modules of R/I. The obtained upper bound is sharp if R/I is an isolated singularity, and the lower bound is sharp when R/I is Gorenstein and F-pure. We also give an example of a local cohomology module that has different D-module and F-module lengths.

  • Total Synthesis of (+/-)-Ramariolides C and D

Kuse, Masaki   Moriguchi, Maiko   Hachida, Masashi   Takikawa, Hirosato

Ramariolides A-D (1-4) were isolated from the coral mushroom Ramaria cystidiophora, out of which 1 showed in vitro antimicrobial activity. The structural features of 1-4 are attractive synthetic targets. Here, we report the total synthesis of ramariolides C (3) and D (4). The vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction was employed to construct the carbon skeletons of 3 and 4. The key precursors for the reaction were alpha-hydroxyaldehydes, which were prepared from cyanohydrins via reduction with diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL). Successive acetylation of the aldol adducts and an elimination reaction of the resulting acetates yielded 3 and 4 upon treatment with tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF) and acetic acid.
