  • Ischemic preconditioning increased the intestinal stem cell activities in the intestinal crypts in mice

Chen, Yun   Lee, Shih-Hua   Tsai, Ya-Hui   Tseng, Sheng-Hong

Background: Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) can protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury in the small intestine. Because intestinal stem cells (ISCs) control the recovery and growth of intestinal villi, this study investigated whether IPC had any effects on the activity of ISCs. Materials and methods: The small intestines of mice were treated with IPC, laparotomy only (sham), or no surgery. The crypt fractions were isolated and the characteristics of ISCs among various groups were compared. The regenerative ability and the number of organoids grown from various crypt fractions were compared. The expression of hypoxiainducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) and the related proteins of the Wnt-/beta-catenin pathway in the crypt fractions were studied. Results: The IPC group had higher messenger RNA levels of various stem cell markers than the sham group at days 1 and 2 after surgery. The IPC group exhibited greater regenerative activity and more crypt organoids than the sham group (P < 0.05). The expression of HIF-1 alpha, beta-catenin, and phosphoglycogen synthase kinase 3 beta was increased in the IPC-treated crypt fractions in vivo and cultured crypt organoid cells with deferoxamine-mimicked hypoxia in vitro. Conclusions: IPC significantly upregulated the activity of ISCs, possibly through the HIF-1 alpha response and Wnt-/beta-catenin signaling pathway. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • REHEATING COOKED FOOD SUCH AS MEAT

In order to provide reheating of cooked food that leads to an improved result of the reheated food, e.g. meat, in a facilitated manner, an apparatus (10) for reheating cooked food is provided that comprises a container (12) for receiving food to be reheated, a sensing module (16), a heating module (18), and a processing unit (20). The sensing module is provided with an emitter arrangement (22) configured to emit at least light as first sensing radiation (SRA1) with a first sensing peak wavelength (SWL1), and light as second sensing radiation (SRA2) with a second sensing peak wavelength (SWL2). The first and the second sensing radiations have different reflecting characteristics in relation with fat and protein in the food, e.g. meat to be reheated. The sensing module is also provided with a sensor arrangement (24) configured to detect light with the first sensing peak wavelength and light with the second sensing peak wavelength; wherein the light is reflected by the food. The heating module is configured to provide energy to the food arranged in the container by at least one heating radiation source (30) for heating the food in dependency of a determined fat/protein ratio. The processing unit is configured to determine the fat/protein ratio (32) of the food arranged in the container based on the detected light reflected by the food. The processing unit is configured to determine operating parameters (38) of the heating module, and to control the heating radiation source to emit light as first heating radiation (HRA1) with a first heating peak wavelength (HWL1), and light as second heating radiation (HRA2) with a second heating peak wavelength (HWL2). A power output of the first heating peak wavelength and the second heating peak wavelength is adapted to have a different absorption characteristics relating to fat and protein of the food/meat.

  • TEMPERATURE CONTROL DEVICE, FOOD COOKING DEVICE AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING A HEATING UNIT FOR COOKING FOOD

The present invention relates to a temperature control device comprising a control unit for controlling a heating unit of a food cooking device according to the following control scheme: i) a preheating period for heating up the food to a first food temperature of at most 60°C; ii) a temperature holding period for holding the food temperature within a temperature range of 30°C to 70°C for at least one minute; and iii) a heating period for heating up the food to a second food temperature of at most 100°C. This control scheme ensures that γ-glutamyl hydrolase is not thermally inactivated and thus can hydrolyze polyglutamate forms of folate into monoglutamate forms and that folate bioavailability during cooking processes is enhanced.

  • Tearing of the Indian lithospheric slab beneath southern Tibet revealed by SKS-wave splitting measurements

Chen, Yun   Li, Wei   Yuan, Xiaohui   Badal, José   Teng, Jiwen

Shear wave birefringence is a direct diagnostic of seismic anisotropy. It is often used to infer the northern limit of the underthrusting Indian lithosphere, based on the seismic anisotropy contrast between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Most studies have been made through several near north-south trending passive-source seismic experiments in southern Tibet. To investigate the geometry and the nature of the underthrusting Indian lithosphere, an east-west trending seismic array consisting of 48 seismographs was operated in the central Lhasa block from September 2009 to November 2010. Splitting of SKS waves was measured and verified with different methods. Along the profile, the direction of fast wave polarization is about 60 in average with small fluctuations. The delay time generally increases from east to west between 0.2 s and 1.0 s, and its variation correlates spatially with north-south oriented rifts in southern Tibet. The SKS wave arrives 1.0-2.0 s later at stations in the eastern part of the profile than in the west. The source of the anisotropy, estimated by non-overlapped parts of the Fresnel zones at stations with different splitting parameters, is concentrated above ca. 195 km depth. All the first-order features suggest that the geometry of the underthrusting Indian lithospheric slab in the Himalayan-Tibetan collision zone beneath southern Tibet is characterized by systematic lateral variations. A slab tearing and/or breakoff model of Indian lithosphere with different subduction angles is likely a good candidate to explain the observations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
