  • Disorder dependence of helical edge states in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells

Chen, Liang   Liu, Qin   Lin, Xulin   Zhang, Xiaogang   Jiang, Xunya

In recent years, extensive attention has been focused on a new topological phase induced by nonmagnetic disorder, known as the topological Anderson insulator (TAI). In this work, we study the disorder strength dependence of the edge states in TAI phase in disordered HgTe/CdTe quantum wells. It is shown clearly that the disorder-induced edge states appear above a critical disorder strength after a gap-closing phase transition. These edge states are then found to decline with an increase of disorder strength in a stepwise pattern due to the finite-width effect, where the opposite edges couple to each other through the localized bulk states. This is in sharp contrast with the localization of the edge states themselves by time-reversal symmetry breaking. The size-independent phase boundaries are further obtained through scaling analysis, where a metallic phase is found separating two topologically distinct phases, which is due to the Fermi energy and mass renormalization.

  • Modeling and exploiting tag relevance for Web service mining

Chen, Liang   Wu, Jian   Zheng, Zibin   Lyu, Michael R.   Wu, Zhaohui

Web service tags, i.e., terms annotated by users to describe the functionality or other aspects of Web services, are being treated as collective user knowledge for Web service mining. Since user tagging is inherently uncontrolled, ambiguous, and overly personalized, a critical and fundamental problem is how to measure the relevance of a user-contributed tag with respect to the functionality of the annotated Web service. In this paper, we propose a hybrid mechanism by using Web Service Description Language documents and service-tag network information to compute the relevance scores of tags by employing semantic computation and Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search model, respectively. Further, we introduce tag relevance measurement mechanism into three applications of Web service mining: (1) Web service clustering; (2) Web service tag recommendation; and (3) tag-based Web service retrieval. To evaluate the accuracy of tag relevance measurement and its impact to Web service mining, experiments are implemented based on Titan which is a Web service search engine constructed based on 15,968 real Web services. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed tag relevance measurement mechanism and its active promotion to the usage of tagging data in Web service mining.

  • A study of user behavior in online VoD services

Chen, Liang   Zhou, Yipeng   Chiu, Dah Ming

A big portion of Internet traffic nowadays is video. A good understanding of user behavior in online Video-on-Demand (VoD) systems can help us design, configure and manage video content distribution. With the help of a major VoD service provider, we conducted a detailed study of user behavior watching streamed videos over the Internet. We engineered the video player at the client side to collect user behavior reports for over 540 million sessions. In order to isolate the possible effect of session quality of experience (QoE) on user behavior, we use only the sessions with perfect QoE, and leave out those sessions with QoE impairments (such as freezes). Our main finding is that users spend a lot of time browsing: viewing part of one video after another, and only occasionally (around 20% of the time) watching a video to its completion. We consider seek (jump to a new position of the video) as a special form of browsing repeating partial viewing of the same video. Our analysis leads to a user behavior model in which a user transitions through a random number of short views before a longer view, and repeats the process a random number of times. This model can be considered an extension, and a more detailed alternative to the closed queueing network formulation introduced by Wu et al. (2009) [1]. As an application of our user behavior model, we use it to measure video popularity. We study the similarity of our approach to subjective evaluation and simple view count based metric, and conclude our approach gives results closer to subjective evaluation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. • Phonon transmission and thermal conductance across graphene/Cu interface

Chen, Liang   Huang, Zhen   Kumar, Satish

We investigate phonon transmission and thermal boundary conductance (TBC) across graphene/Cu interface using density functional theory and atomistic Green's function method. The analysis of phonon dispersions and density of states of single layer graphene (SLG) shows that even weak SLG/Cu interaction can soften the transverse optical and longitudinal optical modes and suppress low frequency out-of-plane acoustic (ZA) modes. Our calculations predict that a small stretching of the SLG lattice (~1.6%) significantly enhances the SLG/Cu interaction which is reflected in larger band-gap for ZA/ZO phonon mode and a remarkable increase in TBC (~59%).
