  • A novel immunoglobulin G monolayer silver bio-nanocomposite

Matea, Cristian T.   Mocan, Teodora   Zaharie, Florin   Iancu, Cornel   Mocan, Lucian

Background: Nanoparticles have a large number of surface atoms, which translates into a significant increase in the surface energy. Once introduced in a biological environment they tend to interact with proteins and form a protein corona shell. The aim of this study was to develop a novel, silver based, bio-nanocomposite for biological applications. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecule was chosen for the passivation of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in order to avoid macrophage recognition of the synthesized structures. Results: Monodisperse IgG-folinate functionalized silver nanoparticles were obtained, with sizes around 39 nm. UV-Vis and UATR-FT-IR spectroscopies were employed to confirm the successful functionalization of the silver nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering measurements gave information about the size and shape of the nanoparticles prior and after the passivation with IgG. Conclusions: Immunoglobulin G formed a monolayer around the nanoparticles with the binding site seemingly in the Fc domain, leaving the two Fab regions available for antigen binding. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an IgG-folinate functionalized AgNP bionanostructure developed for biological applications.

  • On a paper by Yuri G. Zarhin

    Rees, Elmer

In a recent paper, (Math Notes 91(3-4): 508-516, 2012) Zarhin proved that each member of a naturally defined family of linear maps C-n -> C-n has co-rank one. We present a direct proof of Zarhin's result about complex polynomials with distinct roots; it is rather similar to that of Appendix by Vik.S. Kulikov to Zarhin's paper but we give explicit constants. We also discuss the case of a polynomial with multiple roots.

  • A fuzzy description logic F-SHIQ(G)

Yan, Li   Wang, Hailong   Ma, Z. M.

It is widely recognized that management of data types is an indispensable component in intelligent knowledge-based applications. Recent research has shown that OWL (Web Ontology Language) has a serious limitation on data types and does not support customized data types and predicates. Some work has been carried out to address this issue in crisp situations. In order to deal with fuzzy information in the Semantic Web, this paper proposes a new kind of fuzzy description logic F-SHIQ(G), which can support not only the representation and reasoning of fuzzy concept knowledge, but also fuzzy data information with customized fuzzy data types and customized fuzzy data type predicates. The syntax, semantics and reasoning algorithm of the F-SHIQ(G) are investigated in the paper, and its decidability, soundness, completeness and complexity of the reasoning algorithm are discussed in the paper also. For the reasoning for F-SHIQ(G), the paper adopts a traditional reasoning architecture for fuzzy data type reasoning and as a result, new fuzzy data type reasoners can be added without changing the fuzzy concept reasoner.

  • A Low-Power Mixed-Mode SIMO Universal G(m)-C Filter

Parvizi, Mostafa   Taghizadeh, Abouzar   Mahmoodian, Hamid   Kozehkanani, Ziaadin Daei

This paper describes a new single-input multiple-output (SIMO) mixed-mode universal biquad Gm-C filter. It can realize all kinds of filter responses including high-pass, band-pass, low-pass, band-stop and all-pass filters, simultaneously. Moreover, in this structure, all of these filters in all states of voltage mode, current mode, transresistance mode and transconductance mode are achieved by the same topology without any convertor. The proposed filter employs three operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) with four inputs and one output, three fully differential OTAs and two grounded capacitors. In other words, this filter is composed of six Gm blocks and two grounded capacitors. The grounded capacitors are suitable for integrated circuit implementation. In order to reduce the power consumption, the OTAs are biased in subthreshold region. In addition, sensitivity analysis is included to show the low active and passive sensitivity performances of the filter. This filter is designed and simulated in HSPICE with 0.18 mu m model CMOS technology parameters. The simulation results show that the filter consumes only 75 mu W and operates at 1.5 MHz with +/- 0.5 V supply voltages and capacitors C-1 =3D C-2 =3D 2 pF.

  • A computational framework for G/XFEM material nonlinear analysis

    A.B. Monteiro   A.R.V. Wolenski   F.B. Barros   R.L.S. Pitangueira   S.S. Penna

Highlights • An expansion of G/XFEM implementation to physically nonlinear analysis is presented. • Combines different elements and analysis models with G/XFEM enrichment strategies. • A unified framework for constitutive models is used with G/XFEM for the first time. • G/XFEM approximation provides good concordance with experimental results. • The enrichment strategy allows efficient description of the equilibrium path. Abstract The Generalized/eXtended Finite Element Method (G/XFEM) has been developed with the purpose of overcoming some limitations inherent to the Finite Element Method (FEM). Different kinds of functions can be used to enrich the original FEM approximation, building a solution specially tailored to problem. Certain obstacles related to the nonlinear analysis can be mitigated with the use of such strategy and the damage and plasticity fronts can be precisely represented. A FEM computational environment has been previously enclosed the G/XFEM formulation to linear analysis with minimum impact in the code structure and with requirements for extensibility and robustness. An expansion of the G/XFEM implementation to physically nonlinear analysis under the approach of an Unified Framework for constitutive models based on elastic degradation is firstly presented here. The flexibility of the proposed framework is illustrated by several examples with different constitutive models, enrichment functions and analysis models.
