  • On neurobiological, neuro-fuzzy, machine learning, and statistical pattern recognition techniques

    In this paper, we propose two new neuro-fuzzy schemes, one for classification and one for clustering problems. The classification scheme is based on Simpson's fuzzy min-max method and relaxes some assumptions he makes. This enables our scheme to handle mutually nonexclusive classes. The neuro-fuzzy clustering scheme is a multiresolution algorithm that is modeled after the mechanics of human pattern recognition. We also present data from an exhaustive comparison of these techniques with neural, statistical, machine learning, and other traditional approaches to pattern recognition applications. The data sets used for comparisons include those from the machine learning repository at the University of California, Irvine. We find that our proposed schemes compare quite well with the existing techniques, and in addition offer the advantages of one-pass learning and on-line adaptation.

  • Who Defers to Whom and Why? Dual Pathways Linking Demographic Differences and Dyadic Deference to Team Effectiveness

    We develop and test predictions about how demographic differences influence dyadic deference in multidisciplinary research teams, and how differential patterns of dyadic deference emerge to shape team-level effectiveness. We present a dual pathway model that recognizes that two distinct mechanisms task contributions and social affinity-account for how team members' demographic attributes contribute to deference. Furthermore, we propose that the extent to which these different mechanisms are prevalent in a team has implications for the team's research productivity, with deference based on social affinity detracting from it and deference based on task contributions enhancing it. Using longitudinal data from a sample of 55 multidisciplinary research teams comprising 619 scientists, we found general support for our conceptual model. Our findings underscore the importance of accounting for multiple interpersonal mechanisms to understand the complex, multilevel nature of deference in teams.

  • SQUEEZING AND SOME OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF TIME-DEPENDENT HARMONIC OSCILLATOR WITH VARIABLE MASS

    In this paper we investigate the time evolution of a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator (TDHO) with variable mass using Feynman path integral approach. We explicitly evaluate the squeezing in the quadrature components of a general quantum TDHO with variable mass. This calculation is further elaborated for three particular cases of variable mass whose propagator can be written in a closed form. We also obtain an exact form of the time-evolution operator, the wave function, and the time-dependent coherent state for the TDHO. Our results clearly indicate that the time-dependent coherent state is equivalent to the squeezed coherent state

  • Study of the growth temperature dependence of performance and reliability of thin MOS gate oxides

    An in-depth and systematic investigation is carried out to find the role of oxide growth temperature in determining the quality of the resulting gate oxide in MOS devices. Performance of fresh devices as well as degradation under hot-carrier stress and radiation exposure are studied using MOS capacitors and MOSFETs. Experimental results indicated that better charge trapping properties and interface endurance to both hot carrier-stress and ionizing radiation can be realized by elevating the gate oxidation temperature. Substantial experimental evidence is provided to establish that interface state generation during stress is mainly responsible for the degradation of various MOSFET parameters. These findings point out that rapid thermal processing may be the technique for the growth of ultrathin gate oxides for deep-submicrometer MOS technology, at least from the quality and reliability point of view

  • Coatings with particulate dispersions for high temperature oxidation protection of carbon and C/C composites

    Two common failure modes of protective coatings on carbon/carbon composites and graphite include poor adhesion and cracking at elevated temperatures or during cool-down to low temperatures. These problems are addressed using the fused slurry approach and highly oxidation resistant coatings are produced. High adherence of the coatings is achieved by forming the layered structures during reaction with the substrate. A novel approach of avoiding through-coating cracks in the coating structure is utilized to substantially enhance the oxidation resistance of the coating. In this approach cracks are confined within the phases, often involving refractory metal carbides, silicon and silicides, of the coating microstructure and through-coating cracks are completely eliminated. Coating systems involving Si-Hf-Cr, Si-Zr-Cr and Si-Ti have been synthesized that can withstand elevated temperature excursions in oxidizing environments. Process parameters such as slurry fusion temperature and time, and slurry composition are optimized to achieve desired coating microstructure and layering with minimal through-coating cracks. Further enhancements to avoiding through-coating cracks are made by employing particulate dispersions within the coating microstructure. The hard particles serve to arrest the growing cracks as well as to aid in refining the grain size of phases within the coating. Both factors contribute to eliminating through-coating cracks, which was essential in producing coatings that are oxidation resistant to 1600°C.
