It is more than half a century since Frederick G. G. Rose (1915-1991) published his classic text, The classification of kin, age structure and marriage amongst the Groote Eylandt Aborigines: A study in method and a theory of kinship (1960) in the former German Democratic Republic. Although the fieldwork for his thesis had been carried out in Australia on Groote Eylandt in 1938 and 1941, a conservative academic establishment and the political climate of the Cold War postponed its publication until 1960. Why were Rose's fieldwork findings suppressed by the powerful gate-keeper of Australian anthropology, Professor Adolphus Peter Elkin (1891-1979)? Moreover, why was Rose later denied a government permit to revisit Groote Eylandt and Central Australia to further his research? This paper examines the early work of the communist anthropologist, Frederick Rose, within the broad context of Western post-war anthropological developments, an expanding capitalist economy and the political tensions of the Cold War era. As a communist and public servant from 1938 to 1954, Rose was forced, after the Petrov Royal Commission cast him under a cloud of suspicion, to seek institutional support for his academic career in the German Democratic Republic.

Appropriate methods for sensory profiling by children have not been developed for use in the food industry. In this study, a 3 phase procedure was used to generate descriptors, measure their appropriateness and determine the attributes that predict liking of various meat products (rump steak, lamb chops, hamburgers and sausages) in children aged 6-7 and 10-11 yr ( n = 208). Models for predicting liking were generated using multiple linear regression analysis, and validity, reliability and independence of attributes that predicted liking were checked by cross-validating and diagnostic procedures. Results showed that a wide range of appropriate descriptors were generated by both groups of children, and that the predictive models and profiles were predominantly reproducible. Both age groups differed in the attributes that influenced liking, as taste/smell was important for 10-11 yr-olds, while mouthfeel characteristics were important for 6-7 yr-olds. Although 10-11 yr-old girls liked sausages less than their male counterparts, in general, gender did not influence liking.

The impressive performance of the research in mitochondrial genetics and human aging in the last decade outlines a new scenery in which the inherited variation of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) may play a role in rate and quality of aging. This variation in humans was initially looked at as nearly neutral, and useful just for the reconstruction of human population history. However, recent data suggest that different mtDNA molecules are qualitatively different from each other. The aim of this paper is to discuss current ideas on the relationships among mitochondrial function, mtDNA inherited variation, and aging. The main processes where the mitochondrion is involved and the importance these processes have on aging and death of individuals will be described. A possible connection between programmed death phenomena (mitoptosis, apoptosis, phenoptosis) and rate and quality of aging will be discussed. Finally, the possible role played in these processes by the mtDNA germline variation will be explored.

Introduction: Abdominal actinomycosis is an uncommon disease. Nevertheless it should be considered in case of unclear tumor-like abdominal masses. Methods: We report a case of a 49-year-old patient with an intrauterine device. The patient was submitted with a solid and painful tumor in the upper abdomen. After sonography, computerized tomography, gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy the preoperative presumptive diagnosis was a carcinoma of the transvers colon invading the abdominal wall. Pathological examination after a right hemicolectomy surprisingly revealed an actinomycosis. Results: Based on this case diagnostic tools and therapeutic options of actinomycosis of the colon are discussed. Conclusions: This case illustrates the importance to consider the possibility of actinomycosis when finding an unclear abdominal mass. After a surgical excision an abdominal actinomycosis requires antibiotic therapy.
