Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyze the discourses of men and women engineering students and degrees at UTFPR and UFBA about the reasons for choosing their undergraduate programs. The study is part of post-doctoral research which investigated, from a perspective of gender, the choice for studying engineering from two universities. The research was divided into two stages, one quantitative and the other qualitative, and the qualitative step being performed from virtual interview. The results point to the fact that there are many factors that interfere in the choices of men and women for choosing their program. Among them, there is the family and former teachers influence, the expectation of salaries and especially their will. The different reasons given by the students of the analyzed courses are not related exclusively to gender. Undergraduate programs characteristics not necessarily associated with gender stereotypes play significant role in these choices.=09
The first total synthesis of the diaiylheptanoid acerogenins E and K, isolated from Acer nikoense MAXIM., is described. Formation of the 13-membered m,m-cyclophane skeleton was successfully achieved on the basis of a domino process involving a Miyaura arylborylation intramolecular Suzuki reaction. The cyclization precursor was prepared via a Wittig reaction and Claisen Schmidt condensation, which proceeded in moderate yields. The total synthesis of acerogenin G and centrolobol was also achieved from a common synthetic intermediate. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Abstract Amongst conceptual divergences about regular press production, this article aims to propose a classification model to improve the understanding on such matter, deep-rooted on a communicational perspective, paying attention to Journalism particular rituals. Based on bibliographical research and considering empirical investigation results, systematically attained during several years, the defense here presented states that journalistic messages must be understood from two steps subdivisions: the genres and the formats subjected to them. From this point of view, the aim is to organize the parameters that orientate one of the most adopted classifications in Brazil, avoiding distorted appreciations.=09
Genotype x environment interaction (G x E) can lead to differences in the performance of genotypes across environments. A G x E analysis can be used to analyze the stability of genotypes and the value of test locations. We developed a SAS program (SASG x E) that calculates univariate stability statistics, descriptive statistics, pooled and yearly ANOVA, genotypic and location variation, cluster analysis for location, and correlations among stability parameters. Univariate stability statistics calculated are Wricke's ecovalence (W-i(2)), Shukla's variance (sigma(2)(i)), Lin and Binns cultivar superiority measure (P-i), Francis and Kannenberg coefficient of variation (CVi), Kang's yield stability statistic (YSi), Perkins and Jinks beta (beta(i)), regression slope (b(i)), and deviation from regression (S-d(2)). Other output includes input files for analyzing stability in R soft ware using AMMI and GGEBiplotGUI packages. SASG x E uses SAS programming language features (macro and structured query language [SQL]) for repetitive tasks, making it efficient and flexible for the simultaneous analysis of multiple dependent variables. SASG x E is free and intended for use by scientists studying the performance of polygenic or quantitative traits in multiple environments. The SASG x E program is presented here and is also available at http://cuke.hort.ncsu.edu/cucurbit/wehner/soft ware.html.
There is a surprising amount of philosophy (in terms of both values and logic) underlying the way we choose to measure poverty, including in the matter of the seemingly uncomplicated task of specifying an income poverty line. The present essay examines some of these issues of fact, value, and reasoning as they apply to the enterprise of assessing magnitudes of, and trends in, global money-metric poverty.
