  • Low write amplification in solid state drive

Methods, systems, and computer programs are presented for storing data in a solid state drive (SSD). One method includes an operation for detecting a plurality of streams writing to the SSD, each stream writing in sectors, a page including a plurality of sectors and a block including a plurality of pages. A write operation includes writing at least one complete page, and an erase operation includes erasing at least one complete block. The method further includes operations for allocating a write buffer for each stream in RAM memory, and for storing each received sector of a stream in the corresponding write buffer. When a write buffer stores enough sectors to fill a page, content of the write buffer is written to a page in flash memory such that the page is filled. Further, the write buffer is freed after writing the content of the write buffer to the flash memory.

  • Nutrition and gastric cancer risk: an update

    Chun Liu   Robert M Russell

Data from epidemiologic, experimental, and animal studies indicate that diet plays an important role in the etiology of gastric cancer. High intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, lycopene and lycopene-containing food products, and potentially vitamin C and selenium may reduce the risk for gastric cancer. Data also suggest that high intake of nitrosamines, processed meat products, salt and salted foods, and overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk for gastric cancer. However, current data provide little support for an association of β-carotene, vitamin E, and alcohol consumption with risk for gastric cancer.

  • PSS design for damping of inter-area power oscillations by coherency-based equivalent model

Chun Liu   Ryuichi Yokoyama   Kaoru Koyanagi   Kwang Y. Lee

In Japan, low-frequency oscillations have been observed on trunk transmission systems, and have been the subject for studies in fields of operation, control, and devices by many power system utilities. Power system stabilizers (PSS) are very effective controllers in enhancing the damping of low-frequency oscillations, since the controllers can increase damping torque for inter area modes by introducing additional signals into the excitation controllers already equipped with generators. To analyze and solve the problem of long-term poor damping oscillation phenomena, a method is presented to find the best allocation and to design PSS for damping inter-area power oscillations. The method is based on the single-machine-infinite-bus models derived from the multi-machine power system by coherency-based reduction technique. Dynamic simulations using a IO-machine power system model are presented in order to show the effectiveness of the PSS designed according to the proposed method

  • Are there Structural Breaks in Realized Volatility?

    Chun Liu   John M Maheu

Constructed from high-frequency data, realized volatility (RV) provides an effi- cient estimate of the unobserved volatility of financial markets. This paper uses a Bayesian approach to investigate the evidence for structural breaks in reduced form time-series models of RV. We focus on the popular heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) models of the logarithm of realized volatility. Using Monte Carlo simula- tions we demonstrate that our estimation approach is effective in identifying and dating structural breaks. Applied to daily S&P 500 data from 1993-2004, we find strong evidence of a structural break in early 1997. The main effect of the break is a reduction in the variance of log-volatility. The evidence of a break is robust to different models including a GARCH specification for the conditional variance of log(RV ).

  • Optimization of extraction and isolation for 11S and 7S globulins of soybean seed storage protein

Chun Liu   Hongling Wang   Zhumei Cui   Xiaoling He   Xiansheng Wang   Xiaoxiong Zeng   Hao Ma

A new method was developed for extraction and isolation of 7S and 11S fractions from soybean seed, based on methods of Nagano et al., Thanh and Shibasaki [Nagano, T., Hirotsuka, M., & Mori, H. (1992). Dynamic viscoelastic study on the gelation of 7S globulin from soybeans. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 40, 941-944 and Thanh, V. H., & Shibasaki, K. (1976). Major proteins of soybean seeds. A straightforward fraction and their characterization. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 24, 1117-1121]. Optimization of the extraction and isolation of 11S and 7S globulins from soybean seed was investigated under various conditions by the Kjeldahl method and SDS-PAGE. The optimal conditions were as follows: 0.03-0.06M Tris-HCl buffer (pH 8.5) containing 0.01M sodium bisulfite as extract solution, extraction twice at 45degreesC for 1 h, and with a 1:15 ratio (w/v) of flour:Tris-HCl. The 11S fraction was precipitated at pH 6.4, and the supernatant, after centrifugation, was adjusted to pH 5.5 to remove the insoluble intermediate fraction by further centrifugation. The supernatant obtained was then adjusted to pH 4.8 to afford the 7S fraction as a precipitate by centrifugation. With the improvements, the protein contents and purities of the isolated 11S and 7S fractions were significantly increased. The contents of all subunits of the isolated 11S and 7S fraction were markedly higher than those by Thanh and Shibasaki method, while the contents of alpha, beta and B 3 were also significantly higher than those by Nagano et al. method.
