Affibodies as an alternative to antibodies in biosensors for cancer markers

Biosensors for Medical Applications

Issue Date:
2012

Abstract(summary):

Development of immunoassays and immunosensors for detection and monitoring of cancer markers is currently a major area of research and, as more markers are discovered and their role in disease becomes better understood, this will continue to grow. Success of these assays is largely due to the properties of the antibodies used to capture and detect the analyte, resulting from the high sensitivity and specificity of immunoglobulins. However, they are not without disadvantages and this has led to investigation into alternatives that maintain the binding abilities of antibodies, but minimise any associated problems. Affibodies are one such alternative.
